The world is noisier than it’s ever been. It is becoming increasingly difficult to focus our attention where we want to. As a culture where overwhelm is the norm and noise, both internal and external, is so prevalent, it can seem impossible to find moments of silence and time to be still.

Leigh Marz and Justin Zorn, authors of “Golden: The Power of Silence in a World of Noise,” talk about the meaning and power of silence in a noisy world, how to find silence, why you need it, and how it can change your life.

Their book discusses why silence is important for our personal and collective wellbeing and how to experience deep silence while living a full life. As well as exploring the concept of silence, the book also explores what goes on in nothingness and where silence truly exists.

Leigh is a collaboration consultant and leadership coach to federal agencies and major companies. Justin has served as a meditation teacher and legislative director in the US Congress. Together Justin and Leigh cofounded Astrea Strategies, a consultancy that specializes in helping individuals and organizations develop solutions from a place of attention and centeredness.

Key Highlights

  • Silence is less about finding a quiet place and more about being present. We experience silence in spaces that allow us to avoid interference with our perception and intention.

  • Our everyday lives are full of opportunities to listen actively and stay present, but how often do we do this?

  • The absence of sound does not always imply silence. What makes sound different from noise? How can we find quiet in a noisy environment?

  • Are quiet and silence subjective experiences? What can we do to experience internal quiet and flow?

  • Our fear of getting quiet and seeking silence can prevent us from experiencing silence. Why is that?

  • How to avoid being overwhelmed by noise by tuning your senses to silence and being a discerning listener

  • Is silence something you need to find? Justin explains that quiet can be accessed at all times and shares ways he has utilized micro-moments in his life to get quiet.

Powerful Quotes by Leigh and Justin

Leigh:

There is a mass proliferation of information that is grabbing our attention increasingly with push notifications, pinging, zinging, all these things, and our attention, our ability to process that information, has not increased in any meaningful way.

It’s our birthright to be able to have pristine attention no matter what gadgetry we may own or be into.

Justin:

Silence is the absence of noise. Not all sound–but the absence of noise in the sense of unwanted distraction. In the sense of nothing making claims on your consciousness. In the sense of nothing interfering with your clear perception and intention. When we think about silence, we often think about quiet spaces, but sometimes there are spaces that are high decibel, but they’re like flow states where there’s no self referential thought, where there’s nothing interfering with clear perception and intention because we’re in the silence of the moment.

Stop mistaking stress from aliveness.

Valentina LeQueux is here to talk about the mindset needed to combat negative thoughts, using breathwork for trauma release, her struggles with body image as a fitness lover, and her self-worth during and after an unhealthy marriage.

We can learn a lot from our pasts, but as Valentina says, we can’t fix anything there. The only thing we truly have control over is this present moment. That mindset has gotten her through the hardest of times and led her to accept what is right here, right now.

Valentina LeQueux is a BA, CPT, breathwork facilitator, and Founder of Naked Coaching and the NKED app. Valentina creates online programs to educate a wide variety of people on how to stop over-complicating training and nutrition, so your mind is clear to build the body and mind you’ve always wanted.

Key Highlights

  • Who is the non-obvious Valentina? “I’m the laziest person you’ll ever meet, not joking,” she says. Valentina talks about why she’s struggled to meet her movement and fitness goals this year, downgrading to 1-4 training sessions a week, and why she too needs a coach. She also opens up about her struggle with body image and how she’s finding acceptance of her biggest insecurity, cellulite.

  • Valentina describes the inspiration and mindset behind her online fitness coaching programs, emphasizing the importance of education and community in any health and fitness journey.

  • She discusses the reality of navigating low self-confidence and low self-worth after leaving a toxic relationship and how she became more aware of her negative self-talk.

  • Psychedelics can be very healing, but unfortunately, they don’t always lead to healing experiences. Valentina speaks up about her unfortunate experience with psychedelics and offers words of wisdom and caution about using them.

  • Having learned so much about what she doesn’t want in a partner, Valentina is now in a very healthy relationship! Listen in as she speaks on how she was able to open up again after a divorce and why she never would have seen this relationship coming.

Powerful Quotes by Valentina

Everything is a choice.

I’m always trying to be as fair as I can while still understanding that I am human and I have my own feelings and I have my own trauma.

Don’t stay in the past. You can’t fix anything in the past. You can try to learn from it… but the only thing that you can do is keep living in this moment in time.

Powerful Quotes by Jeff and Charles

The mind has the ability to do many wonderful things, we just don’t really listen to it.

One of the beautiful things about our brand and about our experience is that it is self-guided. Listen to your body. There’s no right way or wrong way to do a lot of these services. It’s about listening to what you need and how you feel.

I see… recovery as kind of the gym model, in terms of availability. I think that’s where we’re headed.

Key Highlights

  • What does it mean to know your baseline? Why is it important to know your baselines and health markers? So many of us don’t know our own health markers, but if we do, we’ll be better able to sustain our health and prevent disease. Tune in to hear Julie describe this in more detail.

  • What is the different between functional, traditional, and precision medicine? Julie breaks these down for us and explains why you should consider leaning into functional and precision medicine more.

  • Julie speaks on the importance of having a relationship with your doctor as well as the best ways to advocate for yourself and strengthen your patient/provider relationship. She also talks about how to present your health concerns to your doctor to ensure they really hear you.

  • Chase describes how Wild Health helped him discover his predisposition for cardiovascular disease and the subsequent choices he made to improve his baselines and prevent the disease.

  • Julie details why she worked with a mindset coach as a CrossFit competitor and how mindset shifts can significantly improve your physiological health.

  • The external is not always an accurate representation of the internal, meaning you can look healthy on the outside while being very unhealthy on the inside. Listen in as Julie reflects on the unhealthiest, most stressful time in her life: when she entered med school as a top tier CrossFit athlete.

Powerful Quotes by Julie

There’s so much that we can optimize that then helps us build resilience for whenever something happens that’s unexpected… Covid is a great example of this. If all of your markers are optimal, then you’re much less likely to get really sick or to really be debilitated.

Talk about having a big impact on your health, your thoughts literally can change your physiology!

The food we eat, the exercise, the sleep, that’s all really important, but probably even more important is our emotional and spiritual health.

Jeff Byers is a former NFL player and the current CEO of Amp Human, which offers innovative products that help athletes push the limits on their performance, adaptation, and recovery.

With an interest in both sports and entrepreneurship from an early age, Jeff always harbored an interest in finding creative ways to push his boundaries for growth as a human. “I was always thinking about the little things I could do to get better,” he says. “I tried to use my brain to work smarter than always just work harder.”

After retiring from the NFL, Jeff worked for a few years in the finance space before joining an early-stage biotech startup in late 2015. This company had discovered a way to deliver pharmaceuticals through the skin, bypassing the GI system which often limits the body’s ability to optimally absorb vitamins and minerals taken orally.

Not long after joining the company, Jeff and one of his partners developed a broad vision for a business offering products specifically formulated to optimize human performance, a space in which they saw, at the time, a huge gap in the market.

Listen in as Jeff talks all things human performance and optimization and why he refers to it as a “broad spectrum”. He also discusses the benefits of Amp Human’s flagship product, PR Lotion, and its newly released D+ Lotion.

Key Highlights

  • Jeff explains how to differentiate between human performance and biohacking, and how he optimizes his cognitive abilities.

  • Routines are great for introducing discipline; but could they also be a limiting factor to evolving, adapting, and breaking past barriers with regard to human performance?

  • What does Jeff mean by “broad spectrum human performance”?

  • Jeff speaks on the relationship between mindset and human performance.

  • How do Amp Human’s products, particularly PR Lotion, help humans break their limits and achieve more?

Powerful Quotes by Jeff Byers

  • One of the things I learned from sports was how to make decisions, and how to make decisions fast knowing that you’re going to fail. It’s important to fail fast but how do you evaluate that and actually move forward over the long-term to really be able to create big gains over time?

  • Human nature is how we continue to move forward whether we are doing it willingly or not, or knowingly or not.

  • Human performance is not one thing. Human performance and optimization is this crazy puzzle that has everything in it, and the puzzle is a little different for everybody.

  • Our goal at Amp Human is to deliver relevant solutions using a systems-based approach to athletes who train with a purpose, or to humans who continually seek to level up.

  • We don’t know what the potential of a human is, and we won’t know.

  • We believe there are three core pillars to human performance: perform, adapt, and evolve.

  • How do we not just train harder, but also maximize everything around it including the mind, body, and soul?

Powerful Quotes by Laura Varney

And then postpartum. It's like, how do I get back to what I used to be before I was pregnant? Which I'm here to tell you. It doesn't happen. You're not gonna go back to what you used to be? No, but that's okay.

There were times for sure… When I was like pregnant, and I'm like, ‘Oh, I'm pregnant during the pandemic, Oh, this sucks.’ But then it's also like, ‘Oh, but I'm also at home with my family who I love.’

Be in it. Stop thinking about like, what's going to happen later, and stressing about what's going to happen later so much.

EFR 659: From Vision to Millions and The Importance of a Compelling Why with Jason Franklin

Rewind 10 SecondsPlayFast Forward

00:00:00

00:00:00

A compelling “Why” can drive your actions and goals to great heights, and few exemplify this better than today’s podcast guest and Co-Founder of Sportiqe apparel company, Jason Franklin.

In an effort to escape pain and discomfort he experienced growing up, Jason created a company that has given him opportunity, abundance, and community. The products he has developed have become part of culture and are worn by big stars such as Justin Beiber, Beyonce, and Jay Z. During today’s episode, Chase and Jason discuss Jason's dreams as a child, the pivotal moments that led him to realizing his calling, his entrepreneurial journey, and his why behind it all.

Throughout school, Jason felt uncomfortable with himself and was teased. As a 9-year-old living in Chicago, Jason had crazy red hair and really wanted a hat he could find comfort in. Being a huge sports fan who grew up in Chicago, he naturally wanted a Bulls hat. As Jason also suffered from abuse at home, gathering hope for his future was challenging, but once he focused on his vision and started drawing hats, unexpected opportunities began to appear. Within a few years, Jason started Sportiqe with the goal of making the most comfortable clothes you can buy. Jason believed that having access to the most comfortable clothes would allow people to be in their most comfortable state, enabling them to be the best version of themselves. With this product, the vision was to create something that elevates the wearer's mood and hopefully allows the consumer to access their true calling and follow their passions and dreams.

Nowadays, so many people are searching for their path in life. Jason’s belief is that if you believe in it, you can achieve it. Keeping with Jason's philosophy, he hopes that his products can provide customers with the comfort they need to find their true calling and realize their potential.

Powerful Quotes

Good people find a way to meet each other. - Jason

When a big storm is coming, animals have a choice, and people have a choice, in a metaphorical storm … You can run away from it, or you can take the traits of the buffalo and run right through it. Because at the end of the day, running right through it is going to be much quicker than it is to run away from it. - Jason

Eventually the storm is going to catch you. It’s coming. You’re going to get caught up in it, but the quickest way through is running into it. - Jason

We find ourselves surrounded by icons, and leaders, and movers, and shakers, and just extraordinary thinkers. There’s a perception outside looking in that we’ve made it, that we’re there and we’re the best at what we do, but I think it comes from the fact that we stay in constant pursuit of making sure that we’re not the best at what we do, or at least not the smartest person in the room. - Chase

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was: Know what you’re good at, know what you’re not good at, and what you’re not good at, go find some really really smart people that are good at that. So that's the thing that I continue to seek in scaling the business. - Jason

I try to find the positive in every negative, and I look at every experience that I'm having, even it could be an extremely tough circumstance, and I don’t sit in it … What am I learning from this situation, and how can I move forward, and how can I become a better person from it? Those are the things I like to look at in every situation that I'm in. - Jason

I don't have all the answers. I haven't met someone who has all the answers. - Jason

Keep showing up to rooms where you have no idea how the hell you got in there. - Chase

What’s the secret to putting together a perfectly imperfect formula to find success in our perfectly imperfect life?

Award-winning researcher and health coach Michelle Segar sits down with Chase to talk about what it takes to achieve lasting changes in our health and fitness. She explains why it’s so important to build a strong foundation of understanding around human behavior, and how these behaviors influence how we make decisions, big and small, in our day-to-day lives.

Michelle discusses the role of goal-setting and motivation on our journey of growth, and how having a strong “why” drives us forward as we make our daily choices. She encourages us to always have self-compassion, and to see the path of lasting change as an opportunity to better not just ourselves, but those we care about as well!

Michelle Segar is an award-winning, NIH-funded researcher at the University of Michigan with almost thirty years studying how to help people adopt self-care behaviors, like exercise and healthy eating, in ways that bring meaning and joy and can survive the complexity and unpredictability of the real world.

Key Highlights

  • When is motivation the answer? Does it ever actually serve us or is it always going to be nothing more than a crutch?

  • Getting clear on your “why” is, more often than not, the missing link between making lifestyle changes, and sustaining those changes.

  • Michelle explains why she prefers to use the term “daily choice making” instead of “behavior change”.

  • Not every big decision needs to be life-or-death. When we’re on the verge of making choices related to our health and fitness, having compassion for ourselves is more motivational and effective than judging ourselves harshly.

  • Michelle shares how we can create our own “self-care hierarchy”.

Powerful Quotes

We should never initiate a behavioral change because we think it’s something we “should” do, but because we think it’s going to be deeply valuable for us. That is the foundation of autonomous, sustainable motivation.

When we do something instead of nothing, not only does it keep us moving forward on the path of lasting change; we also take care of ourselves. And when we take care of ourselves, we have so much more to give to the people we care about. That is what makes life meaningful.

On today’s podcast, Chase is joined by John Fieldly, President and CEO of Celsius energy drink. With its thermogenic properties, Celsius is a ready-to-drink beverage that not only tastes great, but also burns calories and fat. To set Celsius apart from other energy drinks and become a staple in people's fitness lifestyles, its founders knew that their health claims had to be backed by science. The drink’s formula is clinically proven to function, free of artificial preservatives or flavors, and low in sodium to promote a healthy lifestyle.

Since its humble beginnings, Celsius has become one of the fastest-growing beverage brands on the market and is now a staple in many peoples’ healthy lifestyles. The company is now ranked number two on Amazon for energy drinks and partners with a number of major influencers and brands.

In this episode, John will discuss how he grew Celsius to where it is today, including how he leveraged the better-for-you movement that has been gaining traction over the last few years and how Celsius strategically incorporated itself into the lives of people who want to lead a fit and healthy lifestyle. Among the things he discusses are the markets he focused on, his advertising and social media strategies, and the importance of sales and marketing working together.
