Chase welcomes Dr. Julie Foucher to talk about how precision medicine differs from conventional medicine and why mental and emotional health is often more important than your lifestyle. Chase then shares his own results and experience using Wild Health’s genetics-based healthcare.

Dr. Julie Foucher is a former CrossFit athlete, functional medicine expert, and Physician at Wild Health, a precision medicine and primary care service offering holistic, personalized healthcare based on your genetics. They provide a comprehensive health analysis using advanced testing and create a custom care plan to help you decode your DNA and unlock better health.

Could precision medicine save us from diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disease? We think so! In fact, it’s been clinically proven…

Key Highlights

  • What does it mean to know your baseline? Why is it important to know your baselines and health markers? So many of us don’t know our own health markers, but if we do, we’ll be better able to sustain our health and prevent disease. Tune in to hear Julie describe this in more detail.

  • What is the different between functional, traditional, and precision medicine? Julie breaks these down for us and explains why you should consider leaning into functional and precision medicine more.

  • Julie speaks on the importance of having a relationship with your doctor as well as the best ways to advocate for yourself and strengthen your patient/provider relationship. She also talks about how to present your health concerns to your doctor to ensure they really hear you.

  • Chase describes how Wild Health helped him discover his predisposition for cardiovascular disease and the subsequent choices he made to improve his baselines and prevent the disease.

  • Julie details why she worked with a mindset coach as a CrossFit competitor and how mindset shifts can significantly improve your physiological health.

  • The external is not always an accurate representation of the internal, meaning you can look healthy on the outside while being very unhealthy on the inside. Listen in as Julie reflects on the unhealthiest, most stressful time in her life: when she entered med school as a top tier CrossFit athlete.

Powerful Quotes by Julie

There’s so much that we can optimize that then helps us build resilience for whenever something happens that’s unexpected… Covid is a great example of this. If all of your markers are optimal, then you’re much less likely to get really sick or to really be debilitated.

Talk about having a big impact on your health, your thoughts literally can change your physiology!

The food we eat, the exercise, the sleep, that’s all really important, but probably even more important is our emotional and spiritual health.

Jeff Byers is a former NFL player and the current CEO of Amp Human, which offers innovative products that help athletes push the limits on their performance, adaptation, and recovery.

With an interest in both sports and entrepreneurship from an early age, Jeff always harbored an interest in finding creative ways to push his boundaries for growth as a human. “I was always thinking about the little things I could do to get better,” he says. “I tried to use my brain to work smarter than always just work harder.”

After retiring from the NFL, Jeff worked for a few years in the finance space before joining an early-stage biotech startup in late 2015. This company had discovered a way to deliver pharmaceuticals through the skin, bypassing the GI system which often limits the body’s ability to optimally absorb vitamins and minerals taken orally.

Not long after joining the company, Jeff and one of his partners developed a broad vision for a business offering products specifically formulated to optimize human performance, a space in which they saw, at the time, a huge gap in the market.

Listen in as Jeff talks all things human performance and optimization and why he refers to it as a “broad spectrum”. He also discusses the benefits of Amp Human’s flagship product, PR Lotion, and its newly released D+ Lotion.

Key Highlights

  • Jeff explains how to differentiate between human performance and biohacking, and how he optimizes his cognitive abilities.

  • Routines are great for introducing discipline; but could they also be a limiting factor to evolving, adapting, and breaking past barriers with regard to human performance?

  • What does Jeff mean by “broad spectrum human performance”?

  • Jeff speaks on the relationship between mindset and human performance.

  • How do Amp Human’s products, particularly PR Lotion, help humans break their limits and achieve more?

Powerful Quotes by Jeff Byers

  • One of the things I learned from sports was how to make decisions, and how to make decisions fast knowing that you’re going to fail. It’s important to fail fast but how do you evaluate that and actually move forward over the long-term to really be able to create big gains over time?

  • Human nature is how we continue to move forward whether we are doing it willingly or not, or knowingly or not.

  • Human performance is not one thing. Human performance and optimization is this crazy puzzle that has everything in it, and the puzzle is a little different for everybody.

  • Our goal at Amp Human is to deliver relevant solutions using a systems-based approach to athletes who train with a purpose, or to humans who continually seek to level up.

  • We don’t know what the potential of a human is, and we won’t know.

  • We believe there are three core pillars to human performance: perform, adapt, and evolve.

  • How do we not just train harder, but also maximize everything around it including the mind, body, and soul?

Powerful Quotes by Laura Varney

And then postpartum. It's like, how do I get back to what I used to be before I was pregnant? Which I'm here to tell you. It doesn't happen. You're not gonna go back to what you used to be? No, but that's okay.

There were times for sure… When I was like pregnant, and I'm like, ‘Oh, I'm pregnant during the pandemic, Oh, this sucks.’ But then it's also like, ‘Oh, but I'm also at home with my family who I love.’

Be in it. Stop thinking about like, what's going to happen later, and stressing about what's going to happen later so much.

EFR 659: From Vision to Millions and The Importance of a Compelling Why with Jason Franklin

Rewind 10 SecondsPlayFast Forward

00:00:00

00:00:00

A compelling “Why” can drive your actions and goals to great heights, and few exemplify this better than today’s podcast guest and Co-Founder of Sportiqe apparel company, Jason Franklin.

In an effort to escape pain and discomfort he experienced growing up, Jason created a company that has given him opportunity, abundance, and community. The products he has developed have become part of culture and are worn by big stars such as Justin Beiber, Beyonce, and Jay Z. During today’s episode, Chase and Jason discuss Jason's dreams as a child, the pivotal moments that led him to realizing his calling, his entrepreneurial journey, and his why behind it all.

Throughout school, Jason felt uncomfortable with himself and was teased. As a 9-year-old living in Chicago, Jason had crazy red hair and really wanted a hat he could find comfort in. Being a huge sports fan who grew up in Chicago, he naturally wanted a Bulls hat. As Jason also suffered from abuse at home, gathering hope for his future was challenging, but once he focused on his vision and started drawing hats, unexpected opportunities began to appear. Within a few years, Jason started Sportiqe with the goal of making the most comfortable clothes you can buy. Jason believed that having access to the most comfortable clothes would allow people to be in their most comfortable state, enabling them to be the best version of themselves. With this product, the vision was to create something that elevates the wearer's mood and hopefully allows the consumer to access their true calling and follow their passions and dreams.

Nowadays, so many people are searching for their path in life. Jason’s belief is that if you believe in it, you can achieve it. Keeping with Jason's philosophy, he hopes that his products can provide customers with the comfort they need to find their true calling and realize their potential.

  • Jason’s origin story and who and what inspired his work ethic

  • During Jason's "Aha" moment, he realized he wanted to do something bigger and start his own company

  • Jason describes the experience of seeing something that started as a vision in his head now on millions of people, including those he looked up to

  • How can we leverage our reality, our experience, and escape from pain, darkness, and unbearable things in life? How did Jason manage to do that? The buffalo logo was chosen based on its characteristics

  • How Jason keeps improving, passes on excellence, and continues learning from other experts and leaders

  • How to achieve your dreams and the best advice Jason has ever received

  • The impact of the past few years on Jason's business

  • Jason's company culture and views on teamwork.

Powerful Quotes

Good people find a way to meet each other. - Jason

When a big storm is coming, animals have a choice, and people have a choice, in a metaphorical storm … You can run away from it, or you can take the traits of the buffalo and run right through it. Because at the end of the day, running right through it is going to be much quicker than it is to run away from it. - Jason

Eventually the storm is going to catch you. It’s coming. You’re going to get caught up in it, but the quickest way through is running into it. - Jason

We find ourselves surrounded by icons, and leaders, and movers, and shakers, and just extraordinary thinkers. There’s a perception outside looking in that we’ve made it, that we’re there and we’re the best at what we do, but I think it comes from the fact that we stay in constant pursuit of making sure that we’re not the best at what we do, or at least not the smartest person in the room. - Chase

One of the best pieces of advice I ever got was: Know what you’re good at, know what you’re not good at, and what you’re not good at, go find some really really smart people that are good at that. So that's the thing that I continue to seek in scaling the business. - Jason

I try to find the positive in every negative, and I look at every experience that I'm having, even it could be an extremely tough circumstance, and I don’t sit in it … What am I learning from this situation, and how can I move forward, and how can I become a better person from it? Those are the things I like to look at in every situation that I'm in. - Jason

I don't have all the answers. I haven't met someone who has all the answers. - Jason

Keep showing up to rooms where you have no idea how the hell you got in there. - Chase

What’s the secret to putting together a perfectly imperfect formula to find success in our perfectly imperfect life?

Award-winning researcher and health coach Michelle Segar sits down with Chase to talk about what it takes to achieve lasting changes in our health and fitness. She explains why it’s so important to build a strong foundation of understanding around human behavior, and how these behaviors influence how we make decisions, big and small, in our day-to-day lives.

Michelle discusses the role of goal-setting and motivation on our journey of growth, and how having a strong “why” drives us forward as we make our daily choices. She encourages us to always have self-compassion, and to see the path of lasting change as an opportunity to better not just ourselves, but those we care about as well!

Michelle Segar is an award-winning, NIH-funded researcher at the University of Michigan with almost thirty years studying how to help people adopt self-care behaviors, like exercise and healthy eating, in ways that bring meaning and joy and can survive the complexity and unpredictability of the real world.

Key Highlights

  • When is motivation the answer? Does it ever actually serve us or is it always going to be nothing more than a crutch?

  • Getting clear on your “why” is, more often than not, the missing link between making lifestyle changes, and sustaining those changes.

  • Michelle explains why she prefers to use the term “daily choice making” instead of “behavior change”.

  • Not every big decision needs to be life-or-death. When we’re on the verge of making choices related to our health and fitness, having compassion for ourselves is more motivational and effective than judging ourselves harshly.

  • Michelle shares how we can create our own “self-care hierarchy”.

Powerful Quotes

We should never initiate a behavioral change because we think it’s something we “should” do, but because we think it’s going to be deeply valuable for us. That is the foundation of autonomous, sustainable motivation.

When we do something instead of nothing, not only does it keep us moving forward on the path of lasting change; we also take care of ourselves. And when we take care of ourselves, we have so much more to give to the people we care about. That is what makes life meaningful.

Sarah Fay is the author of the memoir, Pathological: The True Story of Six MisdiagnosesPathological explores the consequences of over-identifying with a psychiatric diagnosis and how doing so can lead to self-stigmatization and self-limitation.

During this episode of Ever Forward, Sarah discusses mental health diagnoses, from what they are to where they come from, how she lived through six of them, and how we can embrace and understand them better as a society.

The stigma that society places on mental illness is well known, but what about the stigma we place on ourselves? Could that actually be more harmful? In Sarah's opinion, yes.

Sarah discusses candidly in this episode how being diagnosed with Anorexia as a child caused her to over identify with the diagnosis and attach her thoughts and feelings to it, which led her to believe that she wouldn't be capable of doing many things in life, such as maintain a long-term relationship or hold down a full-time job. Fortunately, Sarah's perspective on her mental health has evolved to where she doesn't feel this way anymore. Her ability to reframe her diagnoses and honor her experiences has been a result of good mental health practitioners, a supportive family, and her willingness to take charge of learning more about her diagnoses and where mental health diagnoses come from.

Key Highlights

  • Sarah discusses the experience of receiving her first psychiatric diagnosis at the age of 12 and what led to it.

  • How Sarah views her diagnoses in hindsight after 25 years in the mental health system.

  • Sarah discusses how a psychiatrist made her think differently about her diagnosis and how she began to investigate the history and origins of mental health diagnoses.

  • How Sarah distanced herself from her diagnosis, freeing herself from self-inflicted limitations

  • Sarah's views on the advantages and disadvantages of receiving a diagnosis, as well as how mental health practitioners can better communicate with patients about their symptoms and treatment options

  • An evolutionary perspective on anxiety: How our brains keep us alive

  • In what ways can a diagnosis empower us?

Powerful Quotes

You are not a diagnosis. Your pain is so complex. It’s what makes us human. It’s what makes you a good person. It’s what makes you have empathy for others.

The problem with DSM symptoms is they are actually common emotions, thoughts, and behaviors … things we experience everyday.

The DSM is what we have. It’s incredibly flawed. There are bad apples in psychiatry just like there are bad apples in any profession. It’s a way for us to talk about our psychic and emotional pain, and it’s all we have right now.

The three Ps are very important, and it’s people, place, and purpose.

I respect what I went through, and that’s why I live the way I do, not in fear that something is going to come back or that I live with this mental illness lurking inside me at all times.

In this discussion, Touré and David talk about the health benefits of airway hydration and how to breathe better in a dirty world. Together, they highlight FEND, an innovative new product that hydrates your airways and helps you breathe better.

Believe it or not, we need salt to stay hydrated. We also need clean air and optimal breathing to promote longevity, productivity, optimal performance, holistic well-being, and a high quality of life. So, how can we do this?

The cleansing power of natural salts

THE NEW FRONTIER OF HYGIENE

Our guests are Touré Roberts and Dr. David Edwards. Touré is a best-selling author, entrepreneur, producer, pastor, and serial humanitarian. Dr. David Edwards is a Harvard Professor and Founder and CSO of FEND. Together, they’re bringing impactful information along with this innovative health solution to communities around the country.

Key Highlights

  • Minority communities are disproportionately impacted by polluted air and dehydration. Bringing this information to people will save lives and improve the quality of life around the world. “I think that people are going to be FENDing the same way they’re putting on deodorant in the future,” Touré says.

  • Today, we’re losing between 3-10 years of life because we’re breathing dry, dirty air. When your airways dry out, your lungs can’t filtrate properly. David breaks down the scientific research behind FEND and Touré shares why he became so passionate about changing the way we breathe.

  • The duo details the shocking connection between air quality and asthma in children and minority populations, along with how this can be improved with simple technology and education.

  • How do I know if FEND is right for me? David speaks on who should be using FEND, from athletes and frequent travelers to people with allergies or COPD, and the ways we can bring this health solution to the communities that need it most.

  • How does your health change when you breathe better (when your airways are clean and hydrated)? David describes the symptoms of dry airways and how airway hydration improves all aspects of your health, like sleep, physical activity, and even mental health.

Powerful Quotes by Touré and David

All living organisms, whether they’re in the ocean or outside of the ocean, need salt to stay hydrated.

Breathing dirty air begins to affect us from our first breath.

There’s a real need for us to awaken to the fact that not all breaths are equal.

It becomes my meditation. I meditate when I FEND and I FEND when I meditate.

Episode resources:

More about Fend...

How FEND works

Made from pure salts and water, FEND works by helping your upper airways flush out billions of tiny particles in the air by capturing them on a watery layer as you breathe them in.Together with some of the world’s top academic institutions, we’ve developed a science-backed approach to keeping your airways clean and healthy.

Scientifically proven

Pioneered at Harvard University by Professor David A. Edwards, our understanding of upper airway hydration is evolving to meet the tall challenges of breathing the dry dirty air of the 21st century.

When we inhale FEND's calcium-enriched salts through our nose, they help strengthen our natural defenses against dirty air by pulling more water in: essentially enhancing your body’s ability to clean away airborne particles.FEND precisely blends these salts with an ultra-fine mist that carries them throughout your upper airways, so they can get to where they’re needed most.

Your upper airways naturally defend against airborne particles with a special lining that captures and cleans them away. Modern environments and lifestyles can cause this lining to break down and fail. Not only does our blend of salts hydrate your airways, it actually helps your mucus retain its natural structure longer in the face of the many stresses that contemporary living brings.

Two deep breaths of FEND strengthens your airways’ natural defenses for up to 6 hours

Based upon peer reviewed research.

00:00:00

In this discussion, Chase and Ben talk about the biggest regret people have at the end of their life, how to avoid having that regret, and how to be true to yourself so you can live a life with purpose. Ben speaks on the power of having an accountability partner, physically writing down your goals, and pursuing what makes YOU happy (not anyone else).

Here’s some food for thought… The things that are truly important to you are the things that will enable you to have the most impact in the world, be the best version of yourself, and be the happiest. Do you agree? Let’s unpack that a bit further…

Our guest, Ben Nemtin, is a motivational speaker, #1 NYT Bestselling Author of “The Bucket List Journal”, and Co-Founder of The Buried Life, a movement born from radical possibility. Ben is on a mission to rethink mental health, lead with purpose, and make the impossible possible.

  • He speaks on how he keeps himself accountable to achieving his goals along with how he maintains quality relationships, highlighting the importance of having an accountability buddy and hanging out with people that inspire you.

  • In order to prove to yourself what you can do, you need to make the choice that anything is possible.

Powerful Quotes by Ben Nemtin

Be true to yourself so that you don’t have any regrets at the end of your life.

My goal is to be as honest with what I want and try to follow that because that’s how I know I am most energized and then able to do what I do best, make an impact, have the most fun and joy, and be the person I need to be.

These things that are circling around in your head are much scarier when they stay inside your brain, but when you talk about them, they lose their charge a little bit.
