Chase and May are joined today by Kara and Caleb Campbell. Kara is a celebrity event planner and human connection facilitator, and Caleb is a West Point graduate, former US Army officer, former NFL player, and former US Olympic bobsled athlete.

Today, Chase, May, Kara, and Caleb talk all things relationships and the importance and necessity of continuous growth and maintaining a space for you to thrive in. They speak on how this all allows for the introduction of deep, meaningful relationships into your life as well as the strengthening of the relationships you already have.

They also dive deep into emotional honesty as being fundamental to progression (or regression, if you lack it). Emotional honesty, they say, serves as a guide that allows you to filter the friendships and other relationships that serve you from those that don’t. That honesty also helps you accept the ease of falling in love and finding your person.

Finally, they reflect on why your perspective of events, particularly challenging ones, is the key factor to your getting through them while taking away valuable lessons for growth. From the divine ambush, discover how you can turn the holy frustration which follows into radical acceptance and, at last, go from there into sacred flow.

Key Highlights

  • Caleb talks about the slippery slope of self-betrayal and how we can hold fast to our truth by always being careful to choose emotionally honest actions day-by-day.

  • We discuss why it’s so important to nurture “conscious friendships” and how to let go of a friend that you have outgrown or who is toxic.

  • We reflect on how and why to make the journey within toward radical acceptance.

  • Our motivation for shedding limiting beliefs should go beyond surface-level goals like making six figures or finding fame of any kind. Those are only byproducts. Caleb shares how shattering limiting beliefs helps us live in the present moment and unlock our fullest potential.

  • We give our thoughts on how to make the gradual transition of seeing life happening to us, to life happening for us, to life happening through us.

Powerful Quotes

As you become more self-aware and more conscious of who you are and the driving forces behind your life, you know if what you’re about to do is an act of self-betrayal or not. [...] We have to become more emotionally honest with ourselves, because every time we commit an act that is emotionally dishonest, we commit an act of self-betrayal. ~Caleb

I think that we over-prioritize loyalty sometimes where we’ll stay in things just to be loyal, and then we end up in these toxic, unfulfilled, unhealthy relationships. ~Kara

It doesn’t matter what you do or how you do it. If you do it to your fullest potential, and do something that you love and believe in, whatever that outcome is, the growth will yield the highest potential of love for yourself and [others]. ~Chase

Wendy McCallum is a burnout and balance coach, author, and speaker. In this conversation, she recounts her own struggles dealing with a high-stress lifestyle in the past, as well as the common signs and symptoms of burnout. She offers practical tools that anyone can use to both recover from burnout and prevent it from happening again in the future.

She talks about unhealthy coping mechanisms such as alcohol, food, and social media and how we can learn to rely less on these crutches and become more present.

Wendy also gives her thoughts on the unique challenges that many of us experienced in 2020 and continue to face in 2021.

One of her observations at the tail-end of the pandemic has been the emergence of a “third shift” in the lives of working professionals. If our “first shift” represents our actual career and our “second shift” refers to the people under our care—whether our children or aging parents—our new “third shift” is helping to orchestrate or manage schooling from home.

This, of course, is on top of the overall anxiety all of us have felt in the past year-and-a-half. The pandemic and the resulting lockdowns have led to a significantly higher stress load on the average human being.

Burnout is one of the symptoms of this stress. Whether one came into 2020 physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy, or already overworked, almost everybody has had to deal with exhaustion. (On the other hand, a very small minority—mainly business owners and employers—have found opportunities to become flexible and even more productive in their work.)

Wendy reflects on her own experience with burnout and how she learned to create a life that she no longer needed to escape from.

Key Highlights

  • How can you tell if you’ve reached the point of burnout?

  • Wendy explains the difficult, life-changing decision that marked “the beginning of the end of burnout” for her.

  • Wendy describes the power of self-awareness as the first step toward making change and how you can at that point self-diagnose your stressors in order to move forward.

  • Wendy shares some of her tried-and-tested scripts anyone can use to graciously say no

to things that won’t serve them in the long run.

  • How can one get rid of their reliance on coping mechanisms when under stress (i.e. alcohol)?

Powerful Quotes by Wendy McCallum

Doing something just because you feel like you should do it and you’re good at it—this is one of the most common mindsets that lead to burnout.

It’s really uncomfortable and really painful whenever we become aware of the fact that our life is not where we want it to be. But it’s okay to feel crappy about the fact that you created this perfect storm for yourself.

I’m a big fan of celebrating awareness. Awareness is the prerequisite or precursor to change. If we don’t get aware and mindful about what we’re actually doing, we will never make changes.

You can’t take care of yourself if you don’t make time for yourself.

Powerful Quotes by Riley Rees

Our health does not exist in a silo. Our health consists of our physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual needs.

Our health is not a light switch. It’s not something you can turn on or turn off. It’s a culmination [of your experiences]. Maybe you had childhood trauma 20 years ago. You need to process that trauma to remove the roadblocks and get past it.

The question then became: How can I turn what I now have into a sustainable, and even scalable, business?

Listen in as Jill Coleman of JillFit shares how health and fitness professionals can build and run an efficient and successful health and fitness brand online.

She offers advice on defining your brand as an online coach, best practices for content creation and running paid ads, knowing when it’s time to pivot, why you might need to look for a mentor or support group, and how to move past burnout.

  • How do you overcome “beginner mentality” and define your brand as a coach?

  • What can we do to continue to break through the noise as the online health and fitness coaching space becomes more saturated?

Powerful Quotes by Jill Coleman

We’re in the trust business. It doesn’t matter if you’re the smartest. It doesn’t matter how many letters you have after your name. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been a personal trainer for 20 years at your local gym. People need to have a relationship with you.

[Our clients] need us more than we need them. Double down on your own value and show up to the call confident that you can change this person’s life. If you are scared to talk about your services in a really compelling way, it’s probably because you haven’t sold yourself yet.

Key Highlights

  • Kristen explains why “getting a handle on your sleep behavior” should be the first consideration for anyone looking to improve their performance.

  • How does quantifying our behaviors via technology help us live our lives with more energy and joy?

  • When should we pay more attention to what the data shows us over what our body is telling us, and vice versa?

  • Kristen speaks on her approach to managing her limited amount of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual energy in the most productive way throughout the day.

  • How can we become more aware of how our sphere of influence impacts our psychological and physiological self?

Powerful Quotes by Kristen Holmes

Sleep is the most important behavior that we can leverage if we want to influence our capacity—and I broadly define “capacity” as our ability to adapt in a functional way to our environment with some sort of intention and purpose.

We always talk a lot about enhancements and what medication or supplements we should choose. But if you don’t have your sleep right at a foundational level, you’re not eating the right foods, and you’re not hydrating properly, there is no supplement in the world that is going to be able to overcome that level of mismanagement.

When you don’t understand your body, it’s very hard to be intentional about your behaviors.

If you just live your values, everything rights itself.

As with any journey of self-improvement, weight loss starts and ends with mindset. “Stop thinking of food as ‘good’ or ‘bad’,” says today’s guest, Carter Good. “There’s just food and the context in which it is eaten.”

The struggle to form healthy nutrition and lifestyle habits comes down to the stories that you tell yourself around every decision you make, big or small. Carter himself attributes his past obesity to “using food as an emotional suppressant.”

Carter goes on to say, “It’s really about reframing things and getting people to a place where they don’t feel like they have to make better choices and they have to exercise, but that they get to do these things.”

Carter Good is a weight loss coach and the founder of the Leaner for Life community. He shares the story of how he lost 100 pounds in eight months, and why the hardest part of his journey came only after he lost all that weight.

Key Highlights

  • Why do so many people struggle so much with weight loss, and why is it even harder to

     keep it off?

  • Awareness precedes change. Carter shares some actionable steps to keep track of your progress in a way that keeps you motivated to hit your fitness goals.

  • Learn how you can trust yourself to make healthy food-related decisions and have this confidence ripple into every other area of your life.

  • What makes a good weight loss coach and how do you find one?

  • Carter explains why developing healthy relationships with food and with your body is the biggest win you could possibly have on your health and fitness journey.

Powerful Quotes by Carter Good

Stop thinking of food as “good” or “bad”. There’s just food and the context in which it is eaten.

The problem isn’t “losing 50 pounds”. The problem is all these habits that you’ve developed that aren’t in alignment with losing 50 pounds.

Awareness precedes change.

Losing weight is easy. Keeping it off is the hard part.

EFR 492: How a Death Sentence Can Change Your Life with Logan Sneed

Rewind 10 SecondsPlayFast Forward

00:00:00

00:00:00

More often than not, out of our most challenging moments emerge our greatest opportunities.

It took only 24 hours to turn young Logan Sneed’s entire world upside down. A college athlete and aspiring entrepreneur, a stage-4 brain cancer diagnosis was the last thing Logan ever expected at that point in his life. But that’s exactly what happened following a near-accident on the road when Logan blacked out while FaceTiming his girlfriend.

Together with his strong-willed parents, Logan was able to connect with one of the most sought-after neurosurgeons in the world, who thankfully managed to extract the egg-sized tumor. But just when Logan thought he was in the clear, he was given ten years to live with no word of hope whatsoever.

Even after receiving his “death sentence”, Logan soldiered on, determined to find a solution. He found it when a long-time mentor encouraged him to take up the ketogenic diet, which at the time was still widely unheard of.

Logan went all-in and not only found a new lease on life, but also decided to share his experiences with the world on social media. In spite of a barrage of haters who doubted his story and the legitimacy of his so-called “keto diet”, there were enough people who were inspired by his journey for Logan to realize that he could monetize his growing brand.

Even this wasn’t the end of Logan’s trials. Listen in as he describes the lowest point in his journey so far—even beyond the diagnosis—as well as his betrayal at the hands of a man he once called “mentor”.

But Logan also shares why, when all is said and done, cancer was the greatest thing that ever happened to him, having led him down the path to discovering his purpose and impacting thousands of lives (and rapidly counting) for the better.

Follow Logan @logansneed_

Follow Chase @chase_chewning

Key Highlights

  • Logan describes his approach to navigating times of crisis and uncertainty, particularly as a cancer survivor.

  • Gratitude definitely wasn’t top-of-mind as Logan was battling brain cancer; but in hindsight, Logan regards that trying period of his life with exactly that: immense gratitude. He explains just why he titled his book Thank You Cancer.

  • From getting dumped by his girlfriend of four years to enduring a parasitic business partnership with a longtime mentor, Logan shares how he got through incredibly tough chapters in his life after surviving cancer.

Powerful Quotes by Logan Sneed

A lot of people end up listening to all the voices but they don’t listen to themselves.

Confidence is built by action and consistency.

Cancer is bad. It’s killing people. It’s horrible. I hate it. I don’t love it. But, I had it. I can’t go into the past and get rid of it, but I can create something out of that experience.

EFR 491: How to Make a Career Pivot to Pursue Your True Passion with Sean and Dala McDevitt

Rewind 10 SecondsPlayFast Forward

00:00:00

00:00:00

Up till only a few years ago, Sean and Dala McDevit never saw themselves leading a fast-growing community of wellness enthusiasts with 19 coaches on staff that has led to over 2800 people completely transforming their lives.

The couple had always had a passion for health and fitness (they actually met at a gym) even back when they worked traditional jobs (Sean was in sales and marketing, and Dala was a labor and delivery nurse).

In 2016, Dala set up her Instagram profile @dalalovesdumbbells to share how she found and healed herself through fitness, with the hope of inspiring and elevating others as well. Monetizing the brand was not on her radar; that is, until her budding community began referring to themselves with the hashtag #DLDNation.

Two years later, Sean and Dala decided to quit full-time employment to fully dedicate themselves to #DLDNation.

There was nothing easy about both Sean and Dala leaving their traditional career and plunging headfirst into the world of entrepreneurship; specifically in the health and wellness coaching space. What’s more, neither Sean nor Dala were “certified” trainers or nutritionists.

Listen in as the McDevitts go down memory lane and speak on lessons learned since their life-changing decision to become online trainers exclusively through the #DLDNation brand, including how they navigated the many challenges of running a coaching business brought on by the pandemic.

Follow Sean @fitnessshaman

Follow Dala @dalalovesdumbbells

Follow Chase @chase_chewning

Key Highlights

  • Sean and Dala reflect on their decision to leave the security and familiarity of full-time employment and go all-in on an endeavor with no guaranteed returns.

  • Has the pandemic changed coach-client dynamics?

  • How do you create a crisis-proof online coaching platform?

  • Sean and Dala touch on why sharing your struggles as they are happening rather than after the fact is way more impactful on your community.

Powerful Quotes by Sean and Dala McDevitt

For both of us, the question was, “Do I want to regret this down the road?” We were fine trying this and if it didn’t work, it was fine. We’ll beg for our jobs back and we’ll make it work. But if we don’t do this, a decade down the road, we’ll ask what could have been. ~Sean

Even though it’s challenging at times to be vulnerable, it’s inspiring for people to see somebody that can tell you the kind of embarrassing stuff that everybody else might try to keep behind closed doors, and actually try and convey some of the lessons as they’re throwing shit against the wall in figuring it out. ~Dala

Problems inherently have solutions. ~Sean

John Malanca was inspired to start United Patients Group in 2011 after a totally unexpected episode when his father-in-law Stan was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer along with a brain tumor on his brain stem. The situation seemed hopeless, seeing their father going from being a seemingly healthy 77-year-old one day, to being given a mere two weeks to live the next.

“When you’re diagnosed,” says John, recalling those moments of desperation, “you’ll try anything.” That “anything”, as fate would have it, was cannabis. They started by giving Stan THC capsules infused with coconut oil in order to get him to start eating again. It worked. A day later, he was back at work on a computer.

Nine months after the diagnosis, John’s family got an email that simply stated “no evidence of recurrent disease.” That was in 2011. Today, Stan is alive and well.

Listen in as John shares the exciting journey that emerged out of that harrowing experience. He describes the many benefits of the cannabis plant and, by extension, naturopathic modalities, and how these can help bring the body back to homeostasis.

Follow United Patients Group @unitedpatientsgroup

Key Highlights

  • John speaks on how sleep either directly or indirectly impacts every other area of your life.

  • John busts common myths and misconceptions around cannabis (ex. “The ‘good’, medicinal part of the cannabis plant is CBD and the ‘bad’, recreational part is THC.”).

  • What should you look for in a reputable, high-quality CBD brand or product?

  • John explains why more is not necessarily better. Whether you’re talking about overhauling your lifestyle to include regular workouts or your diet to include healthier food choices, or using a CBD product for the first time—start small and sustainably.

Powerful Quotes by John Malanca

When we don’t have sleep, there’s a domino effect that happens to us in the following days and days and days with regard to stress and anxiety.

If you’re going through something as severe as cancer, you can incorporate cannabis with chemo radiation. It helps with nausea. It helps with appetite. It helps with mood. It helps with healing. It just helps with bringing the body back to balance.

Cannabis is not a one-size-fits-all. What works for me may not work for you. What works for you may not work for me.

“I don’t know any guy who grew up dreaming of starting a male fertility company,” says today’s guest, Khaled Kteily, before proceeding to share the story of why he, in fact, decided to do just that. “There are moments in your life that sometimes take you down unexpected paths.”

Khaled’s own unexpected path began with a freak accident in Tulsa, Oklahoma during his time as a health and life sciences consultant. One day, after a coffee run during a road trip with colleagues, the car was forced to do a sudden break, causing the scalding hot beverages to spill all over Khaled’s lap. His skin was ripped clean off and he suffered second-degree burns that took a month-and-a-half to heal.

Months later, a close friend of Khaled’s found out he had cancer, and so he froze his sperm before beginning a chemotherapy process that would likely leave him infertile. Inspired, Khaled visited a sperm bank to do the same.

Frustrated by the awkward and clinical process involved in sperm freezing, alongside the alarming lack of conversations around declining male fertility rates, Khaled sought to make a change.

This was the spark that led to the founding of Legacy in 2018 and its release of the first product which allows men to test and freeze their sperm in the comfort of their own home, and obtain personalized recommendations based on their results.

Powerful Quotes by Khaled Kteily

If you create a product that is affordable, that is private, that is well-branded, that is normalized, why wouldn’t every guy want to do this?

Even today, our biggest competitors are actually traditional fertility clinics because men think about healthcare solutions to healthcare problems. It is a rare type of man that is thinking for the future—who wants to be the best version of himself; and who wants to watch what he eats, how he exercises, and preserve his youngest and healthiest sperm so that, no matter what happens, he is able to use it in the future.

Your sperm is a great biomarker of your overall health.

May joins Chase on this special episode to answer listener questions on the topic of relationships!

Listen in as Chase and May discuss why busy entrepreneurs should build their work schedule around dedicated quality time with their partner instead of the other way around. They talk about exploration and independence as being two vital keys to keeping their own relationship fresh through the years.

They also offer advice on communicating with a partner who gets out of hand or is acting inappropriately in a social setting, whether their behavior is a one-off or has been recurring for quite some time.

Finally, Chase and May give their two cents on the question of the “right” time to have a baby and why it’s extremely important to consider male fertility when having a conversation around childbirth.
