EFR 487: The Stresses and Successes of Modern Entrepreneurship with Maxx Chewning
00:00:00
00:00:00
For many, 2020 couldn’t have ended sooner. For Maxx Chewning, Chase's younger brother, it was a year full of unexpected blessings, lessons, and accomplishments, particularly in business. Asked to name the one trait that he was forced to level up over the past 18 months, Maxx quickly replied “leadership”.
Now two years into his newest venture, six years into his first, and eight years after establishing his personal brand, Maxx has become familiar with his capacity as an entrepreneur, even as he continues to strive for ever greater success. Listen in as he goes down memory lane and shares how he came to be where he currently is.
Maxx goes on to talk about the entrepreneurial engine that inspires him to dabble and experiment with anything that piques his interest, and how he capitalizes on those ideas that most align with his talents and passions. He also shares why he, as an entrepreneur, is so driven to support his growing team and how he keeps a level head when there are fires to put out.
Finally, Maxx reflects on his humble beginnings just as he was getting his YouTube channel off the ground, touching on what it means to have an “authentic” online presence, how to deal with haters, and why he is a prime example of, “If he can do it, I can do it, too.”

An entrepreneurial spirit drives Maxx to continually try new things year after year, and to hold tight to those things that he realizes he has a talent for. He offers his advice to those who find it much harder to start something new and unfamiliar.
Maxx speaks on staying sane as a small business owner looking to scale.
On a similar note, Maxx explains his approach to balancing his many varied responsibilities among his different businesses.
Everybody who aims to use social media to build a personal brand will run into a universal set of obstacles: “imposter syndrome”, “finding your voice”, and “dealing with haters”. Maxx shares how he was able to push past each of these obstacles after eight years as a YouTuber.
Powerful Quotes by Maxx Chewning
My personal brand is a contributor to the success of my other brands.
Not everyone needs to grow a $100 million business. Not everyone needs to grow a $10 million business. [...] What level are you happy at? Some people think “plateauing” is such a bad word, but with the level of stress that I see some of my friends have with their companies, I tell myself that I don’t think I want that stress.

As avid crossfit competitors, ironman triathletes, marathoners, the two decided to search high and low for an all-natural remedy that met their personal wellness standards. Their choice? CBD.

The Beam 4 was conceived out of the desire to cater to the needs of both professional athletes and the general wellness consumer.

Some of the topics we cover include how they collect and interpret data, both quantitatively and qualitatively, to improve the efficacy of Beam’s sleep product, dream; how the focus, elevate, and clarity, products boost your energy without the crash; and why they decided to separate “recovery” and “sleep” into two different categories.

Every single one of our habits, good and bad, spring out of a thought process that has been (and continues to be) molded and shaped by how we interpret our day-to-day experiences.
If we want to change any negative aspect of our lives, whether it be around our physical or mental health, how we communicate with others, or manage our time or money, it all starts with becoming self-aware of our own deep-seated beliefs and paradigms, then reframing our interpretation of the events that formed those beliefs and paradigms.

EFR 482: Using the Power of Storytelling to Heal Trauma and Create Connection with John Romaniello
00:00:00
00:00:00
Storytelling is a universal human phenomenon with a universal process for telling them and interpreting them. Today’s guest goes in-depth on how to use the power of storytelling to heal trauma, foment connection, and spread your message.
Listen in as John Romaniello shares the historical importance and development of storytelling and his advice on crafting a story that can instantly turn you into a better communicator.
He also gives his thoughts on journaling and why he prefers writing at night versus in the morning, as well the power of journaling to reframe trauma and open the doors to healing.
John Romaniello is an author, angel investor, media personality, and consultant who helps entrepreneurs improve communication skills and increase revenue through writing. Before his foray into hosting writing and storytelling workshops, John founded and managed Roman Fitness Systems from 2003 to 2019.

Key Highlights
John touches on the universal process of storytelling—both in how we tell stories and how we glean information from stories. He also dives deep into his five-part storytelling framework.
How do you avoid going off on one too many tangents when telling your story?
How can we use the art of storytelling to become a better communicator, especially in a one-on-one relationship?
If you use “and then” when making scene transitions in your story, you’re doing it wrong. Learn why “but” or “because” are better words to use.
John explains his unique approach to journaling and the healing power of addressing trauma and hardship through the language of storytelling.
Powerful Quotes by John Romaniello
Telling stories really is a matter of figuring out: What do they know going into the story? What don’t they know that I need to fill in for them? and How do I bring them on this journey so that the end of that story gives them something?
That’s what a great story is: You can see it. You can experience it.
Things do not happen in sequence. They happen in consequence; which is to say, something happens and that makes something else happen. There’s causality—this because of that.
Your journal—your writing, your storytelling, whatever it is—provides you the opportunity to go back and have all of this information, which you can then write into a new story and present in a different way to move through some of this stuff.

There’s been a rising trend in recent years of using technology to better understand and optimize the human body. Through these tools we track, tweak, and train not only our wellness but also our ability to perform, and even use these tools as a means to increase our lifespan. We can now do all these things through the lens of the “quantified self”.
Today’s guest explains how his company, Hyperice, has taken the tools and technologies used by the world’s most elite athletes and brought them to the masses to help them “warm up quicker, recover faster, and move better.”
Listen in as Jim Huether shares the approach Hyperice uses to continuously develop technology in order to more precisely meet the needs of the human body as we come to better understand how it functions.
In particular, he touches on their new HyperSmart ecosystem which pulls activity data from their wearable devices and provides wholly personalized recommendations based on that data.
He talks about how the technology guides users toward behavior change in the most natural, human way possible, as opposed to the overly restrictive, one-size-fits-all approach that many coaches take.

Key Highlights
Rather than using the human experience to develop technology, Jim shares how he uses technology to understand and enhance the human experience.
While quantitative data can be incredibly helpful, you still need to glean actionable steps from your interpretation of that data. Find out how Hyperice aims to stay on the cutting edge with their technology while always providing a stellar experience for their users.
Jim speaks on the new HyperSmart technology, which curates content from their wearable devices and provides recommendations on how and when to use the products.
HyperSmart focuses on three buckets: warmup, recovery, and body maintenance. Most people understand the first two. Jim explains how he is trying to get people to change their habits via HyperSmart to better maintain their body.
Jim touches on how he intends to incorporate the importance of sleep into the Hyperice technology in the near future.
Powerful Quotes by Jim Huether
What’s really interesting to me, from a big picture perspective, is that with the emergence of all the data, the wearable devices, and new technologies, people are caring more about understanding the human body.
If you understand what’s going on in your body, and you can extrapolate the data and understand what it means then you can provide more of an accurate service, accommodation, recommendation, or whatever it may be to improve the human body and get it back on track.
You only have one body. We really believe that the more we teach and educate people about how important it is to take care of it, the more effective we can be in this world as a company.

Relationships isn’t normally the first word that pops to mind when we talk about food. Today’s guest illustrates what it truly means to embody our relationship with food and defines “healthy eating” in terms that go way beyond calories, macros, and choosing so-called “good” foods.
When we’re in tune with what we’re eating, food allows us to connect to ourselves, to other people, and to the world on a visceral and emotional level.
Listen in as Kara Campbell shares how she came to embrace the connective power of food at an early age, just from sitting around the table with her family at dinner time every night. She explains how this evolved into the idea that dining with others and asking intentional questions leads to friends and strangers alike mirroring pieces of themselves back to one another through conversation.
She then unpacks the topic of intuitive eating and why most people fail to reconnect to their bodies and simply trust that they know what they need.
Kara then talks about how her upbringing within purity culture had a profoundly negative impact on her relationship with food and why women growing up in such an environment almost always have body image issues and destructive eating habits.
Finally, Kara touches on why our body is our wisest teacher and the surprising benefits beyond the physical that one experiences once they are able to repair their relationship with food.
Kara Elise Campbell is an embodiment coach who teaches women how to connect with their bodies and come back home to themselves.

Key Highlights
Kara shares how, as far back as she can remember, she intuitively knew that food is connective, even as she personally struggled with her relationship with food for many years.
Do certain foods stimulate certain conversations? What is Kara’s approach to choosing foods for the dinner parties she hosts?
As the saying goes, “The body keeps the score.” Find out what it takes to be able to intuitively eat and choose foods not with your mind but with your own body by listening to the signals unique to you.
Having grown up in hardcore purity culture, Kara was taught that “the body is bad and sinful”. She explains how her unique upbringing impacted how she viewed food and chose what to eat.
Our body is our wisest teacher and if we feed it well, trusting that it knows what it needs, our life transforms in every possible way. Kara describes some of these benefits, including a few surprising ones.
Powerful Quotes by Kara Campbell
I love having good food; but, really, it’s about this idea of having people around the table or a cheese board or whatever it might be. What happens when we do that is we create the space for actual connection. We create the space to have the hard conversations and the good conversations—any conversation.
Food is our number one vehicle to connect to ourselves. How we eat is everything. How we eat and nourish our body speaks volumes about how we see ourselves and how we see the world.
Thanks to modern diet culture, we are told all day, every day that somebody else knows our body better than us. The truth is, no one can know your body better than you. No one can know what you need except for you. But we’re not taught that.

EFR 478: From Fitness Stage to Center Stage and How Mindset Can Both Help and Hinder You with Savannah Lynx
00:00:00
00:00:00
Savannah Lynx reflects on how singing and performance had always been her calling. She hearkens back to her college days at Fordham, remembering that “without music as the centerpoint of my life, I really lost it. I wasn’t engaged in class. I wasn’t excited. I wasn’t working out. It was the keystone that put my life together and made me realize who I was and who I wanted to be.”
At the age of 21, she was inspired—to her parents’ disappointment—to put her college education on hold, fly from New York to L.A., and pursue her music career seriously. Along the way, her ever-present passion for fitness helped her win the coveted titles of Miss Las Vegas International Model Search and Miss Swimsuit USA International.
