More about Tom:

Tom is a world class adventurer who is on a journey to complete the Adventure Grand Slam, summiting the tallest peaks on each of the seven continents and skiing to the North and South Poles. In one year, February 2010 to January 2011, he climbed four of these peaks in his quest to fulfill this dream – Mt. Kilimanjaro in Africa, Mt. Elbrus in Russia, Mt. Kosciuszko in Australia, and Aconcagua in Argentina. On July 5, 2013, Mt. McKinley became his fifth successful summit. His most recent climb took him to Mt. Vinson Massif in Antarctica, where he faced a storm with hurricane force winds and extreme temperatures to summit on December 7, 2016. With the "mother of all mountains" left, Mt. Everest, and skiing to the poles, Tom is well on his way to becoming part of an elite group of mountaineers.

While Tom has achieved abundant successes, they were only reached after a rough and tumultuous journey in his early years of life. In his twenties, Tom lacked direction, as he was caught up in drug and alcohol use—eventually joining the military where he spent a short amount of time in the brig. Lacking motivation, he left the military and drifted aimlessly through jail, bankruptcy, failed marriages, and eventually ended up homeless and sleeping in his car. This place of rock-bottom became the catalyst that pushed Tom to find his purpose and passion.

It was during this dark time that Tom's eyes were opened to an opportunity to change his life forever. At the age of 28, while working for minimum-wage fueling and cleaning private helicopters and jets, he took the first step towards pursuing the purpose and passion he had been looking for. It all started with one question..."What do I need to do to sit in the cockpit of one of these machines?" After being told to forget about it because he was probably too old, and he didn't have a college degree, he not only became a pilot, but earned the title "Captain" at a major airline. He also has the rare distinction of being a dual-rated ATP, flying both helicopters and jets. He was the pilot for the owner of the Cleveland Browns for two years and has flown celebrities, CEO's, and billionaires. This was just the start of Tom's pursuit of his dreams and passions.

Achieving one dream became the start that Tom needed to see there are endless possibilities one can achieve. At the age of 52, an avid natural bodybuilder, Tom landed the title of Mr. Natural Universe. He then moved on with diligence and strength of purpose to graduate from culinary school, to become a certified personal trainer, to become an author of two books, and to become a modern day adventurer. His formula was simple – if he wanted to do something, he made the decision, and then did it.

As an author, Tom has written two books....Ageless You: The Boomers Guide To Beginning Again and Ageless You Adventure. He is currently working on companion books Juicing For An Ageless You and Cooking For An Ageless You. He, also, speaks nationwide about health, wellness and achieving dreams, while sharing his knowledge through coaching. 

This very special episode is meant to highlight what is possible when we stop accepting our circumstances as ultimatums. Casey Adams, fellow Virginian, is an incredible example of what is possible when you decide to take your life and your future into your own hands by putting yourself on the path of personal development and saying "Yes!" to opportunities that others may not think twice about.

While he was a sophomore in high school something happened that would change the direction of his life forever. He was diagnosed with interspinous ligament damage while playing football and was told that he could have potentially been paralyzed. During this time in his life he was told by the doctors that he would never be able to play football again. This was shocking news because football was his absolute passion. Furthermore, he was told that he had to be in a neck brace for over 10 weeks.

All of this negativity came into his life so quickly and he became very depressed and had no idea how to handle the situation. This was the turning point in his life that changed the direction of his future.

Getting into personal development led me into many different industries, and overall allowed me to find my purpose. Dr. Lagos maintains that the heart is the pathway to emotional control. For more than fifteen years, she has consulted, taught, conducted research, lectured, and developed programs to help individuals of all ages reduce their anxiety and improve performance through biofeedback. She is the principle author of “Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback: A Strategy to Manage Competitive Anxiety,” which was published in Biofeedback magazine by the Association of Applied and Physiology and Biofeedback (AAPB). Dr. Lagos is also the lead author of “Virtual Reality Assisted Heart Rate Variability Biofeedback: A Strategy to Enhance Golf Performance,” which was published in AAPB’s Biofeedback magazine.

Unique to the field of sport psychology, Dr. Lagos has worked with amateur and professional golfers of all ages, and has conducted risk assessments for draft prospects of the Chicago Bears and the New York Giants at the NFL Combine, as part of Professional Sport Consultants, Inc. She has also consulted with professional basketball players and their families on issues related to career development for the National Basketball Association (NBA).

Dr. Leah Lagos has worked with collegiate athletic teams across the United States, including competitors in track, rowing, basketball, football, and golf. In today's episode of the show I and my wife, May, RN BSN, discuss one of the pillars of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition's model of healthful living, primary foods. Primary foods, such as physical activity, career, spirituality, and relationships are "foods" that feed our soul and satisfy our hunger for life. There are twelve primary foods that are constantly fluctuating and adjusting as we adjust through the various phases of our lives.

These foods include: joy, spirituality, creativity, finances, career, education, health, physical activity, home cooking, home environment, relationships, and social life. As we navigate through our health journey and coach our clients and patients through their own individualized processes, we may notice these concepts ebb and flow, which is not only normal, but healthy!

In this episode we hone in on some of the more difficult to grasp concepts: joy, creativity, and home environment and provide examples and methods of ways to activate these practices into our everyday lives. As we continue on this podcast (and our own journeys) we will dig in deeper to this concept of primary food and unveil its importance on our quality of life.
