If you’ve been listening to Ever Forward Radio for quite a while now, you would have infallibly come across our discussions focussing HRV or Heart Rate Variability, an essential parameter to measure your heart health and stress levels at any point. While a higher variability of the metric signals that your body can push past strenuous exercises some more, a lower measure is an indication that it needs a break.
Today you’ll explore identified ways to improve your HRV – and all that they demand of you are simple, conscious changes in your everyday habits.
In a host-only episode of Ever Forward Radio, Chase uses his personal story and the science to teach you 10 simple tips that improve HRV. Referencing Mark Van Deusen’s article on Heart Rate Variability (Whoop), he touches on its nervous system origination, significance, stress impact, and applications so you can know why the HRV is a breakthrough metric for wellness. In addition, you’ll learn about the body’s regulatory processes of homeostasis and allostasis that are responsible for maintaining equilibrium despite internal and external changes (both central to your brain’s stress handling mechanism).
For those of you new to the whole HRV study or seeking some of the best toolset, supplements, and product recommendations to start with, Chase also shares the products he personally uses and how they help him in his wellness journey – do not forget to tune in!

Key Highlights
Training well doesn’t remotely imply overtraining. Smart HRV training involves giving your body enough time to recover to avoid straining.
Healthy nutrition at appropriate intervals is essential to maintain your body’s performance and sleep cycles.
In a WHOOP estimate, it was found that your hydration levels were in direct proportion to your body’s HRV. When sufficiently hydrated, your HRV levels could increase by 3 milliseconds (an ounce of water per pound is a healthy measure).
Alcohol severely suppresses your HRV – by up to 22 ms in just a day’s time.
Not only is it true that your body needs sleep, but it’s also true that your body needs to attune to a restorative, consistent sleep cycle.
Going outside, soaking in natural sunlight, and watching the daylight and dark are essential mood and HRV boosters. Natural sunlight is also a source of Vitamin D and can improve your alertness.
Cold thermogenesis is known to activate the parasympathetic branch of your autonomic nervous system and boost heart rate variability.
Controlled breathing helps decrease cortisol levels and aids in heart rate recovery almost immediately.
Mindfulness, meditation, and slow breathing are known to improve HRV significantly.
Gratitude Journaling induces positive emotions, causes a decrease in stress hormones and blood pressure and can effectively improve your HRV.
(Bonus) Tune in to find out!

Notable Quotes
“Not eating close to bedtime within three to four hours will improve the quality of your sleep by allowing your body to focus on other restorative processes instead of digestion.”
“Mindfulness allows us to manage everyday physiological stress by reminding us to be aware and pay attention to the moment when we stress about the future or ruminate about the past.”
“Quality time with people that matter most to you contributes to supporting your emotional health, your mental health. It helps lower cortisol, lower stress, [and also] makes you feel good.”

EFR 557: Reinventing Yourself to Become a Full Time Creative with Chase Chewning and Casey Adams
00:00:00
00:00:00
Challenges suck, but needless to say, they're an inevitable part of life. Whether they're personal or professional, they can strike when you least expect them and leave you feeling helpless and adrift… forcing you into situations you'd have never imagined before. What does it take to pull yourself from back there? How do you not fall apart?
This week, Chase sits with Casey Adams on The Casey Adams Show podcast to revisit his journey as an ex-military man, health coach, and established podcaster, explaining how he reinvented himself continually to chase his passion despite the problems.
Burdened by a queue of stressors post his father's death, Chase battled with himself for years after the tragedy – physically, mentally, and emotionally, including an injury that led to reconstructive surgery in both his hips. The experience had a profound impact on his personal and professional life, and unexpectedly enough, turned it around for the better. Despite the odds, per his father's advice, Chase lives and advocates a life ever forward, one that's led by passion and a desire to do better.
In this discussion, Chase breaks down his journey, explaining the pile-up of challenges and the succession of events that led him to the world of podcasts. Chase explains his uncompromising principles in life and how they've shaped his life's trajectory, the most important being a willingness to continually chase the next big thing and always show up. You'll also hear him break down invaluable podcasting lessons from his own experience – priceless advice from a thriving genius.
Key Highlights
Escaping grief could mean you're unknowingly allowing it to manifest into trauma. It's only when you face your fear that you put yourself on the path to overcome it.
Sometimes, all you need to do is just go for your dreams or goals. Chase explains how he landed his first podcast sponsor by just going ahead and making an authentic pitch.
Tips to get your first few podcast sponsors: dig out the products, services, and the things you love and just reach out, sign up for affiliate programs, or work on creating your personal brand.
Tips for new podcasts (and podcasters): think out of the conventional 'downloads idea' – it doesn't matter if you don't become the next Joe Rogan, just record and upload – get over comparison syndrome, know that the price of your podcast equipment isn't everything – whether your mic costs $80 or $200 is not the listeners' intention to know as long as your podcast isn't about it, batch your episode at least two weeks ahead to make sure you're stress-free.
How to promote your podcast: be everywhere – on all social media platforms and podcast players, continually engage in your feeds, and choose the best podcast hosting platform.
Quotes
“I firmly believe that your emotions and your psyche plays a significant role in the physiological manifestation.”
“I'm challenged now to find the right people, to connect with the right people, because there's so many different pockets of people and an energy and vibes and professions and all the things. And I didn't really connect with a lot of them.”
“You may not like the journey, you may not like the ride, but everything is important.”

Matthew Paetz returns to Ever Forward Radio to share how he has been navigating the seemingly endless period of uncertainty brought about by the pandemic—particularly around how he has been striving to shift from being what he calls an “unconscious consumer” to being a “conscious creator”.
“I’m creating a life I’ve never had by doing things I’ve never done,” says Matthew, adding that his focus has been on building on himself over his achievements. One of the major ways he has been doing this over the past 18 months is by immersing himself in the world of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy as a modality for addressing trauma.
Matthew defines these guided sessions as “medicines for the soul”—contrasting it with alcohol which he calls “medicine for the ego”. He then breaks down the development of our ego and how these sessions allow you to detach from that ego and see your life from a completely different perspective.
“These medicines, in a guided session, would be the greatest gift I could give the entire world,” says Matthew. He believes that, should the public embrace this gift, Western medicine as it pertains to mental health would be “eradicated” in a matter of months.

Key Highlights
Matthew shares how he has been striving to make the shift from unconscious consumer to conscious creator since his last appearance on the show in September 2020.
How do we achieve expansion through restriction?
A common experience among those who engage in guided psychedelic experiences is the almost instantaneous dissolution of ego. Matthew describes how this happened for him.
Matthew addresses skeptics wondering whether psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy is really the next step in discovering who they were meant to become.
Matthew explains why he considers these guided experiences as his “greatest gift to the world”.
Powerful Quotes by Matthew
Environment always wins. Always. You cannot out-intention your environment. It may not win immediately, but it will win inevitably.
The ego is the identity—oftentimes the original identity—we adopt around the age of seven. It’s that zero-to-six timeframe where you establish over 60% of what you believe you are and what you believe to be true about the world around you.
In teaching your ego that your future is actually safer than your past, it begins to protect it more than your past.
These medicines, in a guided session, would be the greatest gift I could give the entire world. [...] I believe psychedelic experiences are medicines of the soul.

EFR 555: How to Lead Yourself and Even the Worst Teams (and Turn Them Into the Best) with John Bacon
00:00:00
00:00:00
John Bacon is a public speaker, college instructor, and the New York Times Bestselling Author of the uplifting leadership book, Let Them Lead: Unexpected Lessons in Leadership from America's Worst High School Hockey Team.
Believe it or not, John himself was once known as the worst player in America’s worst high school hockey team. He later became the head coach of that team and helped transform them into one of the best in just three seasons.
In this discussion, John and Chase uncover the leadership qualities and strategies that make great leaders, as well as how he navigates the bounds of leadership. John sheds light on how to get others to believe in you, how to empower your team to lead themselves, and the top lessons he’s learned from his unique leadership journey.
Follow John @johnubacon

Key Highlights
John learned that having a malleable structure in your team and in your leadership style allows for components of the team to fall into place and for team members to find their calling.
Your belief in yourself determines your achievement in life. Believe in yourself and you will get it done.
There are two things that leaders always have to do: work hard and ask for help. Be the dumbest person in the room, always take notes, and consistently try new things.
You can’t motivate or be a teammate to anyone you don’t know, so as a leader, you must get to know the people you’re trying to lead. Get on their level, build trust, and stay connected.
The most poisonous part about corporate America is the mundanity. If you switch things up and make work exciting, different, and challenging, production and motivation will increase.
Leaders make mistakes! Great leaders work with their team to learn from their mistakes and find ways to improve moving forward.
Powerful Quotes by John Bacon
If I had the world’s greatest resume but did not believe in myself, I’m gonna fail. With a weak resume but a deep belief in my ultimate ability to get this done, even if I was going to screw up along the way, that is far more important.
The easiest way to make it special is to make it hard.
When in doubt, absolutely mix it up and how do you mix it up? Give them more, not less, responsibility. They’ll get excited about it.
Put values before victories or principals before profits.

Björn Woltermann is the Founder and CEO of Katalyst, the world’s most efficient workout. Katalyst is the first and only full-body Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) training designed and FDA-cleared for home use.
Björn discovered EMS training after he had injured his lower back and was told he needed to strengthen his core. He began using EMS to build muscle and in just 20 minutes, he achieved total-body results that would have taken him 2 hours in a regular gym workout.
Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, with all the disease and obesity present in our world, Björn is confident that “this technology, delivered right, can change the CDC statistics.” From healing athletic injuries to osteoporosis, Katalyst seems to be on the right track to doing just that.
In this discussion, they dive deep into how Electro Muscle Stimulation training works and the various ways you can use Katalyst to get specific, personalized results. Björn shares eye-opening insights into the science behind building muscle with EMS training versus traditional training, along with the data gathered on injury prevention and recovery through EMS.

Key Highlights
Electro Muscle Stimulation helps your body contract, activate, and workout your muscles. It can be used on both recovering muscles and healthy muscles, at any strength level, to further build and strengthen your entire body.
Normally, your body doesn’t have the ability to access every single muscle fiber, unless you’re in a high-stress, life or death situation. Katalyst’s technology accesses those muscles for you so you don’t even have to think about it!
After 6 weeks of doing EMS training, Bjoern was off his pain medication and didn’t feel any pain from his prior back injury.
A fully trained athlete can see single digit percentage performance increases after 8 weeks of using Katalyst. You can run faster, jump higher, heal faster, and more.
There’s so much fear and intimidation that keeps people from going to the gym. With Katalyst, you don’t have to go to the gym at all!
Powerful Quotes by Björn Woltermann
What muscle stimulation as a training has done is for the very, very first time, since 3000 years, changed the training itself.
It’s also fun because a lot is happening and you learn something about your body because you get access to certain parts of your body you didn’t have access [to] before.
I was like “what just happened?” I just stood [for] 20 minutes in front of a device and I’m sore as hell… So, I have them a shot, I went every Monday for 20 minutes… and six weeks later I woke up one Sunday morning and I told my wife I haven’t taken a pill in a week and I’m pain-free.

Robert J. Davis, PhD, is a health journalist with a public health background as well as the Author of The Healthy Skeptic: Cutting Through the HYPE About Your Health.
As a journalist, Robert realized how much people are trying to lobby for their new exercise routines, diets, and hospitals. That opened his eyes to all the money and propaganda involved in skewing science and persuading the public to do certain things.
So, should we be putting our trust into “industry experts” on the same level as scientists? Is the validity of health studies and journalism going away?
In this discussion, Robert and Chase examine the role of skepticism in diet culture, nutritional sciences, and general health and wellness. Robert offers tips on how to discern which health studies and claims are trustworthy and which are misleading, noting trusted health resources and publications you can use to stay educated about nutrition. He also shares his candid thoughts on weight loss supplements, precision medicine in weight loss and nutrition, and the power of belief systems in nutrition and health.
Follow Robert @healthyskept
Follow Chase @chase_chewning
Key Highlights
Robert encourages everyone to be a healthy skeptic. Become educated, don’t fall for fad diets and diet myths, and don’t despair.
As research in health and nutrition changes, popular culture perpetuates false and harmful misconceptions, often through fad diets. Fad diets don’t consider long-term health and vitality.
Health research studies are not created equal and research is far from perfect. Pay attention to who conducts the studies, who funds them, and who the hypothesis is tested on. Remember, even the smartest human beings have biases.
Two areas of public health Robert was highly skeptical of were cannabis and psychedelics. Though, after doing his due diligence, he concluded that studies show they have great benefits for various conditions.
Robert is very excited for further scientific research on precision medicine in weight loss and nutrition so that people can finally find the best approach for them.
Powerful Quotes by Robert J. Davis
Be skeptical, but don’t let that turn you into a cynic where you think there’s nothing you can do or you don’t pay attention to any scientific information.
If you look at the history of science, there have been a lot of horrible ideas that have just been perpetuated because of hunches and anecdotal observations. So, at least science gives us a leg up to have a better sense of what is actually true and what is not.
People should be aware of, and there’s a lot of it out there, hyperbolic language… words like secret or shortcut or something that sounds too good to be true. If it sounds too good to be true, it likely is.

EFR 551: Decrease Anxiety and Improve Focus Using Only Your Breath and with Max Gomez
00:00:00
00:00:00
Max Gomez is the Co-Founder and CEO of Breathwrk, a human performance company whose mission is to empower people through breathwork.
After trying breathing exercises on his therapist’s couch, Max realized that breathwork not only helped him manage his depression and anxiety, but it improved his sleep, endurance, and focus. Having studied neuroscience in college, he was thrilled when he discovered the science behind breathwork.
Thus, Max was inspired to create an accessible app that teaches science-backed breathing exercises to people of all ages.
In this discussion, Max and Chase talk about how breathwork benefits the mind and body, the difference between breathwork and meditation, and how to integrate breathwork into your daily life. Max shares a few simple breathwork exercises you can start practicing today and tells his inspiring entrepreneurship story, highlighting how he overcame constant rejection.
Follow Max @maxgomez7
Follow Chase @chase_chewning
Key Highlights
For Max, breathwork was necessary to function in his daily life without anxiety attacks, lack of focus, and depression holding him back.
Put simply, exhaling longer than your inhale will activate your parasympathetic nervous system which makes you feel calm.
Max generally practices energetic breathwork in the morning, equal parts breathing throughout the day, and calming breathwork before events that might make him anxious.
In the Breathwrk App, there are various breathwork exercises that help you calm down, get energized, fall asleep, wake up in the morning, and focus better. Plus, the app breaks down the science behind breathwork’s benefits so you can learn while you practice.
You don’t need to practice breathwork every single day in order to benefit from it. You can do it on a case by case basis, in moments where you need it.
It’s very important to be aware of your posture and to be intentional while practicing breathwork.
Powerful Quotes by Max Gomez
I just want people to be more conscious of [is]… actually controlling your breathing and where that can take you and knowing that you can have control of your mind and body with your breath.
When go through your day-to-day life feeling like you don’t have control and you start to gain more control back, it gives you the mindset of “Okay, I got this.”
When you have an automatic function like breathing, we don’t think about it and we take it for granted. So, you need something to constantly remind you hey, this is how you should breath right now or hey, if you’re feeling anxious, breathe like this.
One of the easiest things to do is to change the way you breathe.

There is a limited number of expert coaches in the world and limited accessibility to coaches for aspiring professional athletes. Technology enables athletes to gain access to the valuable knowledge and practice required to improve their game.
With virtual reality, you’re able to learn and achieve more in less time. WIN Reality’s athletes are now some of the best in the world.
Data and measurement has transformed human behavior, yet in sports, it’s not that simple. WIN Reality VR helps players experience, understand, and learn from the data they receive.
The possibilities of VR in sports include teaching young athletes the principals of performance improvement, like consistency and healthy habits, that go beyond data and statistics.
When it comes to the pursuit of living life ever forward, sacrifice and commitment play huge roles.
Powerful Quotes by Chris O’Dowd
The reason athletes do not continue to pursue is because of the hurdles in improvement and the way we think about product development and the services that we provide is: How do we take those years and years of pattern matching and turn it into… [an] experience where every spectrum of what you would get from these expert coaches is now manifested in a product that can teach you in a more real-time basis.
We’re really trying to push the bounds on how people learn and ingest information in sport via this mechanism.
We want people who are all in. And that doesn’t mean that you can’t have a family and support your kids, but it means you’re thinking, you’re breathing, you’re taking ownership, accountability, you are in a position every single day where you want to drive forward.

Kundalini energy is said to live right below your root chakra. It’s representative of a snake, or your power. In our bodies, we have blockages, constraints, or trauma responses that limit our energy centers from flowing freely. Kundalini is a practice that awakens and unlocks that power and clears the blockages so you can live life more freely.
Each chakra connects to a specific area of the mind, body, and spirit. When imbalances or blockages are present in a certain chakra, you may begin to experience hardships in the relative area of your life.
We all have masculine and feminine energies and sometimes they can become imbalanced. Kundalini yoga and meditation helps you come back to your equilibrium.
Mantras are sacred chants that activate the chakras. Each chakra has a special mantra that you can use to bring balance and flow to that chakra.
If you keep experiencing the same hardships or you’re feeling stuck in life, the only way you’re going to get unstuck is by looking inward.
If you’re looking for an energetic release, know that this is a journey and you can be your own guru. Get excited about learning how to heal trauma and release your blockages. Remember, rest and recovery is when you grow.
Powerful Quotes by Erin Elizabeth Downing
Kundalini yoga is how I learned how to meditate for the first time.
Only for 2-3 minutes we did it, but my brain completely checked out and I went into this incredibly deep meditation and I was like, “Oh my gosh, what is this magic and how do I get more of it?” … I was hooked.
When you are living your truth and your authentic self… when you are in your power… people could say stuff all day long, do whatever they’re doing, and it doesn’t even affect you. But if you happen to be doing things from old programming or from trauma that you may not even be conscious of… the second somebody even brings up the tiniest thing, your whole body is crumbled.
Once you start to learn all these different modalities and you start to see how they all connect, it feels a lot less scary and then you have all these different things that you can tap into.
