EFR 427: Metabolic Flexibility, Resilient Aging, and How to Replenish Electrolytes Properly with Robb Wolf
00:00:00
00:00:00
The woos and wows of Metabolic Flexibility are no longer a secret! Join Chase on this episode of the Ever Forward Radio as he interviews former research biochemist and two-times New York times best-selling author of The Paleo Solution and Wired to Eat, Robb Wolf. He is also the host of the Healthy Rebellion Radio, a weekly show featuring listener Q and A on all things diet and health, and serves on the board of Directors/Advisors for Specialty Health Inc, The Chickasaw Nation’s “Unconquered Life” initiative and a number of innovative start ups with a focus on health and sustainability.
Robb simplifies anybody's understanding of fitness and health by discussing everything from individual body responses to quantity of carbs taken to a lot of other essentials like maintaining electrolyte balance in the body and having sound sleep. Tune in for you to also get a peek into Robb's personal life and learn from him his extensive understanding of health and fitness!
Rob broke the dogma around KETO diets and dove deeper into individual metabolic flexibilities, catering to people’s nutrition needs suitably. Apparently Robbs wife has great metabolic flexibility and he understands from her how different it could be for every person as he says his physical self 'sucks' at the same.
The fact that some of us are over-doing our fitness practices is also something to take a look at. There's a lot that needs to be thought of other than the social media pleasing and planning!
Listen in as the duo also discuss rehydration, recovery and the function of different electrolytes in the body. You'd be surprised to know that you are totally unlikely to die because of consuming less amount of water and the fact that over-consuming the same could have a disastrous impact on your body. Also, sodium is one constituent you undervalue and demonize. Why? Because over-consumption of sodium could perhaps spare you from life threatening illnesses. But when the same is done with Potassium, another bodily electrolyte, the implications are costlier than you can imagine!
Rob also has a thing with reading and researching topics other than health and nutrition, like economics and physics. It helps him increase the quality of living and growing as a person. And it would sure help you widen your knowledge levels and perhaps give you some time off of your routine work habits!
To conclude, what this episode translates to is simple- metabolic flexibility is real and it’s high time you break the myths around the ‘perfect’ diet because a happy you is a healthy you!

Lowering sodium consumption does not reduce hypertension though the opposite is true. Also know the importance of another major electrolyte- Mg. Around 650 of your body processes revolve around it!
For children and adults aged 20-25, declining sleep could mean recovering less everyday. Sleep helps you recover and detox.

LMNT Recharge is a tasty electrolyte drink mix that replaces vital electrolytes without sugars and dodgy ingredients found in conventional sports drinks.
Proper hydration is critical for optimizing mental and physical performance.
Hydration is not just about drinking enough water - to stay properly hydrated you need to consume adequate electrolytes. They help your nerve impulses fire, regulate fluid balance, help produce energy, and support strong bones.
One article in the Journal of Sport Science reported:
“Vigorous exercise and warm/hot weather induce sweat production, which contains both water and electrolytes. Daily water (4-10 L) and sodium (3500-7000 mg) losses in active athletes during hot weather exposure can induce water and electrolyte deficits…”
When you’re physically active and sweat, replacing lost sodium is essential to feel and perform your best. But tons of folks forget about sodium and drink more water when they feel dehydrated - the more common problem here is drinking too much water, not too little. Overwatering dilutes blood sodium levels, causing a dangerous condition called hyponatremia - which can lead to headaches, muscle cramps, and fatigue.
The takeaway is this: drink to thirst - and don’t forget to replace electrolytes. It’s always one of the first things I stress to a new client. Not only will this help eliminate dehydration symptoms like headaches and muscle cramps, it’s essential for keeping our brain, muscles, and organs functioning properly.

With the humongous growth of technology and our constant need for a better lifestyle, we’ve failed to consider the dangers that lurk behind. You’d be surprised to know that though 5G provides a faster alternative to crawling data services, it is causing a huge exponential increase to your EMF exposure. How do you then adapt to changing times and opt for quality choices?
Our guest today knows just how to tune your choices to suit the best. Join Chase on the episode as he interviews Juraj Kocar, CEO at Somavedic Technologies. Somavedic is his dream project for a functional and broadly accessible frequency therapy device meant to harmonize the negative effects of EMF (electromagnetic radiation from cell phones, wifi's, etc).
If that sounds interesting, know also that Juraj has tips for aiding your hydration with ‘quality’ water. Yes. You get to learn today the two kinds of water- structured and unstructured and how the quality of water you consume can enormously affect your body’s hydration.
The strength of the EMF around us is a billion times higher than it was years ago. Equally intimidating is the fact that our heart and the brain are most vulnerable to its dangers. Not just humans, other beings are equally affected- do you know that plants do not grow when kept in an area where WiFi or such radiations are present?
If the negative impacts of exposing ourselves to wireless radiation is this big, why do companies continue to scale and expand the levels of these? How do we hook ourselves out of the negative catch of technology and how can we create a healthier alternative to those? Tune in for an insightful conversation and get yourself matchless words of wisdom from the wonderful entrepreneur guest.
In a nutshell, this episode would help you make better choices for a healthier living!
Key Highlights
5G has not replaced the old 3G/4G. It has another bandwidth and operates at higher frequencies. This also means it needs more towers to operate- increasing our exposure to radiations!
Know what wireless transmission has done to our water bodies.
Apart from affecting our hearts and brains, these radiations also cause tiredness, lower our immunity and cause fertility loss in men.
Learn all about structured and unstructured water and how unstructured water is converted into structured water.

EFR 424: Becoming a Heart-Centered Nutrition Coach Through Trigger Mapping with Laura Poburan
00:00:00
00:00:00
In this episode of Ever Forward Radio, Chase speaks with Laura Poburan of The Unfiltered Coach and L2 Fitness on why her role as a mentor in the health and wellness space is more relevant in 2021 than it has ever been. After all, people around the world have been forced to reevaluate their priorities throughout the last several months.
On nutrition coaching clients, Laura says, “They’re looking for something so much deeper now. They’ve been forced to look at their lives in a new way. They’ve been forced to take account of everything in their life that they aren’t happy about—everything in life that they’re using food to cope with. They’re ready for a deeper transformation. They’re ready to change who they are as people; not just continue to chase the same arbitrary goals year after year after year.”
Laura views nutrition coaching as a vehicle to access different parts of her clients’ lives—to show them that nutrition is just one small aspect, but one that they can use as a foundation for more powerful, holistic change. She calls our eating patterns “the vehicle into our subconscious” which allows us to see where we are falling into disempowering patterns where we are covering up, or numbing, the things in our lives that we are not happy with. Oftentimes, we use food to do just that, if only because food is so accessible.
"When you’re working with people on their deep-rooted triggers, it’s not your role to solve it, but to guide them along to help them discover how to overcome those challenges themselves."
As the saying goes: A man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. This year has placed limiting beliefs on many, or even reinforced limiting beliefs that they already had going into 2020. As much as nutrition coaches may want to swoop in and impose their own beliefs on their clients, they’ll quickly find that this approach will backfire.
Powerful coaches don’t come in to “fix” their clients. Instead, they look to step back and ask questions that raise their clients’ awareness until they are finally ready to receive their lessons. It is only when what you have to say is meaningful to a person that they will act on it.
Follow Laura @laurapoburan
Follow Chase @chase_chewning
Key Highlights
Laura shares why “stepping into my zone of genius and creating more space in my life” is her resolution in 2021.
2020 has proven that nutrition coaches need to go beyond their clients’ eating habits and toward their core values as individuals. Laura describes how she utilizes “trigger mapping” to uncover how her clients view the world and therefore know how to help them undergo a transformation around how they view food.
The coach-client dynamic has also shifted drastically this past year. Laura shares how she had to adapt to challenges to meet the needs of her clients.
Effective coaches drop their ego in order to allow their clients to discover their own issues. The importance of empathy and selfless communication are fleshed out.
Laura explains her process for helping coaches define their vision-mission and values and in turn establish an effective approach to guiding their clients to reach their goals.
Laura talks about how striving for alignment of the tiniest things is her key to living a life ever forward.

EFR 423: Lead During Chaos Like a Navy SEAL and the 5 Pillars of Success with Thom Shea
00:00:00
00:00:00
Chase speaks with Chief Special Warfare Operator Thomas Shea, who discusses his new book Three Simple Things: Leading During Chaos. He draws a parallel between success as an author to success in the military—or, really, success in any endeavor. He refers to this common thread as the monotony of “doing a lot of stupid, simple things that nobody else is willing to do” each and every day The road to success, he says, is “boring”; otherwise, it would not be so elusive to most.
Chase and Thom break the lessons of the book down to the five pillars of health, wealth, relationships, learning, and spirituality. A particular emphasis is put on the spiritual only because it is a rare thing to hear someone in the military discuss this often overlooked dimension of life. In fact, he notes that life begins and ends with the spiritual and refers to our very being as our vessel for making anything that we want to happen, happen.
"If you can un-complicate the shit that’s in your world, you win."
Thom also spends a considerable amount of time speaking on the paramount importance of relationships and how everything simply falls apart without them. Your physical health, your ability to learn, and your financial situation will suffer when your relationship with someone close to you such as your spouse is in dire straits. Thom mentions that he would even kick out members of his SEAL team if he found out that their spouse was cheating on them. “They would get us killed,” he says about those SEALS experiencing the mental and emotional pitfalls of a damaged relationship.
The theme of the monotony of success continues to run through Thom’s best practices for maximizing your health, wealth, and learning capacities. Progress in these areas requires a commitment from you to do the smallest of action steps every single day; nothing more, nothing less. “If you realize it’s stale,” says Thom, “you’re gonna win.”
Follow Thom on Instagram @frogmanout
Follow Chase on Instagram @chase_chewning
Key Highlights
Chase and Thom share their thoughts on the “monotony of success” and how anyone can discipline themselves (if they decide to) to endure the day-by-day tasks that will eventually bring their goals to fruition.
Thom says that spirituality is “your ability to make ripples across time, space, and distance.” He explains how to use your five senses to activate your spiritual awareness, as well as why he advocates that everyone brush their skin every morning and evening.
Thom goes into why the physical, intellectual, and wealth factors of life cannot exist together without relationships.
There are three ways to learn:
Learn something new
Get better at something that you’ve already learned
Let yourself dream. Thom dives deep into these three ways and why he describes dreaming as “strategic learning”
Asked about the final pillar, wealth, Thom goes into how the other four columns play a role into how much (or how little) compensation you receive in the pursuit of what you value.
Thom hearkens back to the SEALs’ saying that “the only easy day was yesterday” as he explains how he lives a life ever forward

In this episode of Ever Forward Radio, Chase speaks with Drew Manning on his second iteration of Fit2Fat2Fit. Drew embarked on another Fit2Fat2Fit journey in 2020, nine years after his first run back in 2011. He reflects on the curiosity that led him to start his experiment almost a decade ago and how it ended up going viral, being featured on shows like Dr. Oz, Good Morning America, The View, and many more before finally becoming a hit TV show on A&E.
Drew’s Fit2Fat2Fit journey gave him a whole new perspective on those who struggle to lose weight or to simply be healthier. He shares how humbled he was during that first experiment and how it nurtured in him something that motivated him to take on this journey one more time: empathy.
“Empathy is something that is lacking in the fitness industry,” he says. “But this world lacks empathy as well.” With all the divisiveness that took place in 2020, Drew thought the time was ripe to relive Fit2Fat2Fit, not just to shine an inspiring light in the midst of all the chaos this year has brought, but also because there are even more opportunities on social media to get eyes on the project now compared to nine years ago.
"Sometimes, I think it takes something crazy to catch people’s attention and motivate them in a different and unique way that they haven’t ever experienced before."
Drew’s ultimate goal is to bring more empathy to the industry and to society as a whole. He says: “I feel like doing it a second time can really disrupt the industry by showing that it’s more of a mental and emotional journey for people who struggle with weight loss.”

Key Highlights
Drew explains how he prepared his family, mentally and emotionally, for his 2020 Fit2Fat2Fit journey, and why this second run is harder than the first.
With the intention of making this journey more educational the second time around, Drew decided to regularly track his biomarkers (ex. heart rate, blood sugar, etc.). He goes into the thought process behind his decision.
It was obviously much riskier in 2020 for Drew to let himself become as unhealthy as he let himself be. He shares how he set safety precautions for himself amid COVID season.
Why did Drew decide on this particular outlandish, risky gesture as his vehicle for disrupting the fitness industry?
Drew’s advice for someone who is unhealthy to take their first step in the right direction.

Mindset is essentially who we are. What we think, why we think and how we think define our daily wellbeing. They are of such importance that science and researches are constantly coming up with new information about the way our brain functions. But, what can we do to shift our mindset once we see a negative pattern happening? In which way we can impact and influence our behavior to match the positive life we know we can live? In this episode, Robyn Downs discusses some of the most important actions we can take to start feeling good.
You will also learn about habit changing and the reasons why is easier to change ourselves than to expect different outcomes, how you can set goals for the next year in a more sustainable and attainable way (that actually works), and what are the 3 non-changing brain patterns that we need to be aware of in order to uncomplicate life and instigate success. Our ways of thinking end up being just little pieces that we, as rational individuals, must gather to solve the whole puzzle.

Ever Forward Radio is brought to you by Recharge electrolyte drink mix by LMNT
Proper hydration requires water and electrolytes, especially for active folks who sweat a ton. Often electrolytes are forgotten.
Drinking too much water - not too little - is the biggest problem for these folks: overwatering leads to low salt levels in the blood (a condition known as hyponatremia - which causes unpleasant symptoms like headaches, muscle cramps, and fatigue).
Properly balancing electrolytes can lead to increased endurance, performance, and recovery.
Main message: drink to thirst, not beyond, and make sure to replace electrolytes lost through sweat, especially sodium.
For low-carb or fasting - electrolytes are key for relieving hunger, cramps, headaches, tiredness, and dizziness.
Sugar, artificial ingredients, coloring, etc is unhealthy and unneeded when hydrating (there’s none in LMNT).

EFR 419: Community, Relationships, and Pivots: A Year in Review with May Yazdi Chewning
00:00:00
00:00:00
2020 year-in-review... relationship style! My wife and I look back at lessons learned over the past twelve months. See, for us, 2020 began as a year with a ton of potential, until about mid-February when practically the whole world came to a grinding halt. Career-wise, we continued to work towards a ton of growth, especially May who finally graduated this year to become a Family Nurse Practitioner. What was highlighted for us above all, though, is how our relationship was tempered by the challenges and uncertainties and came out stronger than ever in spite of it all. Join us as we do a deep dive into the life-changing benefits of what a great support system feels like and why you need to nurture yours today.
Listen in as we share how optimism and a willingness to pivot helped us thrive the past year, the power of having a tight network of family and peers to guide us through tough times, and our plea for others to engage with their community more going into 2021.

100% Grass Fed Beef: Our 100% grass fed and finished beef is raised in the U.S.A. by family farmers focused on using rotational grazing practices and creating lush, green pastures free of chemicals and pesticides. They are never fed grains or given antibiotics! 2.
Organic Spices: We use organic spices to give our beef sticks a delicious, savory flavor. Most other products use conventional spices that have likely been sprayed with herbicides and/or pesticides.
Naturally Occurring Probiotics: This is what truly sets our beef sticks apart. We use old world methods of fermenting our sticks so they are shelf stable without the use of chemicals or questionable ingredients. Virtually all other similar snack stick products use GMO corn-based citric acid encapsulated in hydrogenated oils to process their products. Thanks to this fermentation process, each stick contains gut-friendly probiotics!4.

The science of smarter hydration:
Proper hydration requires water AND electrolytes, especially for active folks who sweat a ton. Often electrolytes are forgotten.
Drinking too much water - not too little - is the biggest problem for many: overwatering leads to low salt levels in the blood (a condition known as hyponatremia - which causes unpleasant symptoms like headaches, muscle cramps, and fatigue).
Properly balancing electrolytes can lead to increased endurance, performance, and recovery.
Drink to thirst, not beyond, and make sure to replace electrolytes lost through sweat, especially sodium.
For low-carb or fasting - electrolytes are key for relieving hunger, cramps, headaches, tiredness, and dizziness.
Sugar, artificial ingredients, coloring, etc is unhealthy and unneeded when hydrating (there’s none in LMNT).

Ease of use
Grab-and-go packaging is convenient when you’re on the road or live an active lifestyle.
Single-serve packets deliver 1,000 mg sodium, 200 mg potassium, and 60 mg magnesium - which makes for easy measuring and dosing of electrolytes on-the-go.
Science-backed electrolyte ratio
Out of all electrolytes, people are most likely to be deficient in sodium, potassium, and magnesium (the latter two are very difficult to get through diet).
No questions asked refunds
Try it totally risk-free. If you don’t like it, share it with a salty friend and we’ll give your money back, no questions asked.

Powerful Quotes by Jill
Divine timing is not under your control but you can always, always count on great things happening when the time is right.
Fitness goals should not be about losing x amount of weight. It should be about prepping your body for one event—this one adventure that you’ve been wanting to do. Goals that are just about looks or about losing weight usually don’t last. There’s got to be a bigger, juicier, and sometimes scarier goal.
50% of the work is showing up. The other 50% is the workout itself.
Once you start understanding what your body thrives on, there’s no way back.
Become a child again and think that everything is possible.
Even if you’re experiencing some pain or have little energy, please, keep moving. Keep using your muscles. Don’t let this time weaken you. Let this time strengthen you.
Variety is key to a healthy body.
Thinking about death every day is what helps me move forward. I am alive. I am here today. How can I make this the best day? If you really think about how life is short, and that you’re not guaranteed to live tomorrow, next year, ten years from now, what would you do differently?
My ever forward is truly staying optimistic and taking excellent care of myself, because no one else is going to do it for me.

The decision to move around the world
That’s me listening to myself. Most of the time, I don’t have a plan. My life was certainly not easy as a result of it. Many people, like my family, do not understand what I was doing. It does not create great energy but I have always trusted the guidance system in me. As a result, my continuous trust on that system fortified everything in me.
The reason why I can speak with conviction is because I earned my achievements. Nobody handed it to me. And nobody can take it away from me.
I trusted that I did not need to know all of the answers. I just needed to take that step forward and listen to it.
How do we listen to ourselves?
Journaling has played a huge role in the development of my self-awareness.
I have always been comfortable listening to myself. Although a lot of people are not, you need to invest in writing and develop yourself by going into it. When you are writing, you have the ability to get your thoughts out and have more clarity it. You process your decisions, see your growth and have the time to connect with yourself.
It takes a lot of courage to listen to yourself, especially when external events will try to guide you away from it.
Its more painful to live a life that is not authentically myself. Live your life with no regrets and don’t be afraid of the painful challenges that might come along the way.
How Roxanne stayed on her ground
Greatness was always something I was attracted to. I’m thinking about the underdog, the individual who got punch not just in the ring, but in life. Keep standing up. It’s okay to get punched, fail and feel what it’s like on the ground. It’s not okay to not get up and keep going.
It’s a roadblock that you will eventually face. You can either stop and not move forward or treat it as a stepping stone to greatness. You got to do the work to climb up that stone. It’s going to be hard for sure.
When I look at the woman I am today, who I love very much. I knew I earned it. Because I keep getting back up. I’m my self’s biggest fan. I’m a warrior that moves through life.
Be your own best friend and witness what it feels like to win.
The Five-S Formula
The Five-S Formula is like the way to live your most empowered self. It has to be sequential on this order:
Self-Awareness is the Anchor
The Anchor leads to Self-Connection
Appreciate your identity and it forms your Self-Love
Love yourself and get back up from the tribulations in life that’s Self-Confidence
Bet on yourself and start doing things right, now you build your Self-Trust
Looking back and moving forward
I’m moving through life with so much inspiration. I feel open. I have this belief that we are not just humans. We are an experience. How people respond to me is a sign that I am on my highest path. At that point, things happen. You meet the people, the opportunity comes up and the idea comes up.
If I relied on externally for self-love, self-worth and self-validation, it’s a very dangerous life to live in because it is a variable that can change at any time.
Loving ourselves
Think about what it feels like to really love yourself, hold compassion for it and be on your team. You are not making things harder than you need to. Things are already hard and when you start feeling this connection, you can’t turn back because it’s uncomfortable.
Having emotional independence is not only important for an individual but also for a team dynamic. You are not responsible for your partner’s happiness and vice-versa. You have to cultivate it within yourself, and resonate with one another.
Admiring the fruits of labor
I witnessed my parent s who came from another country, put their hearts and souls to their lives and create things from it. I grew up seeing the value of hard work, and things that you can afford when hard work is put in practice.
