Episode Highlights

Danielle on Functional Mushrooms

  • Some people are still not familiar with functional mushrooms and their advantages. However, it is one of the most valuable aspects of natural medicine.

  • She felt like not much credit and research is given to mushrooms despite their use in traditional Chinese medicine.

  • People approach Danielle to find alternatives that the medical field and even other alternative practitioners can’t give.

  • Her clients range from people with chronic illnesses to those who want to optimize their own wellness.

  • Mushrooms can be taken every day and in the long term. Their main functions include prevention, building, and nourishing—a ground up approach to wellness.

Adaptogens

  • In natural medicine, categories are based on their action or function. Functional mushrooms belong to the category of adaptogens.

  • Nervines support the nervous system for functions like deep sleep or sedation. Carminatives, on the other hand, support digestive functions.

  • Know more about the three significant markers used to identify an adaptogen in the full episode.

The Effects are Different for Everybody

  • Mushrooms respond to what our bodies need, which is why the response is different for everyone.

  • For Danielle, what really sets natural medicine apart is not only how it's different for everyone but also how it makes her curious to learn more.

  • If people who have the same symptoms take the same herb, the effect would still be different.

  • You can see the difference between the holistic approach and western medicine. When you go to the doctor, you have a prescribed medication with the exact dosage and how long you should take it. However, natural medicine allows you to take the prerogative by listening to your body.

Listen to Your Body

  • Following the natural approach of taking superfoods like mushrooms allows you to listen more to your body.

  • No one knows your body better than you.

  • Tuning in to your body is similar to how fungi connect things in their environment.

  • Fungi are connectors. They are connecting over 90% of plants on Earth with the mycelium web under the soil.

  • Fungi connect life and death as the grand decomposers of the world.

Functional Mushrooms and Their Applications

  • There are many applications of functional mushrooms. Four Sigmatic developed products based on these superfoods to make them easier to ingest.

  • Four Sigmatic makes use of chaga, lion’s mane, reishi, and cordyceps in their products.

  • It’s hard for people to suddenly start a new habit.

  • It might be helpful to incorporate the application of mushrooms in our daily routines. We can take them with our coffee, tea, or any other drink.

Chaga

  • Chaga is a functional mushroom parasitic to birch trees.

  • It's essential to get it directly from the birch tree. Doing so ensures it retains its antioxidant properties.

  • You can take it with coffee, which lowers its acidity, thus preventing you from having a stomachache.

  • It also serves as an immunomodulator, which helps you balance your immune system.

  • According to Danielle, it is helpful for when she travels to several places, which makes her vulnerable to viruses.

Lion’s Mane

  • This functional mushroom is popular for its moniker, "lion's mane for the brain."

  • They are usually called "think mushrooms."

  • People drink coffee because they need caffeine to keep them going. However, drinking coffee can build up your tolerance.

  • Taking your coffee with lion's mane, on the other hand, could still get you the caffeine you need but with additional medicinal benefits from the mushroom.

  • Although adaptogens have different effects for everyone, they all share the same function of supporting our stress response.

Three Main Parts of the Mushroom

  • Mycelium is the underground root system.

  • The fruiting body is the part above ground.

  • The spores are essentially the mushroom seeds.

  • All parts of the mushroom are used for medicinal purposes.

  • Among them, the full fruiting body is the most used for its medicinal benefits.

Reishi

  • Reishi is known as the “queen of mushrooms.” It has been used the longest and has the oldest history, primarily in traditional Chinese medicine.

  • It is responsible for over 500 different functions, making it incredibly diverse.

  • Reishi is a "chill mushroom," which makes you feel relaxed and supports your nervous system,

  • It is best taken after a long day of work and whenever you want to be stress-free.

Shiitake

  • Aside from being an ingredient in many dishes, shiitake can also be used in drinks and other refreshments.

  • Shiitake is one of the ingredients of Four Sigmatic's Golden Latte mix, which contains other superfoods such as turmeric, ginger, coconut milk, and black pepper.

  • The golden latte is also proudly vegan since it comes from plant-based products.

  • It is a “beautify product” because it helps the liver in detoxifying the body.

  • When you support liver function, the most immediate physical manifestation is clearing your skin.

Cordyceps

  • Cordyceps are mushrooms that help oxygenate our system, providing energy without the caffeine.

  • You can take it on its own or mixed in with a stimulant.

  • Cordyceps are naturally found 13,000 feet over the Himalayan Mountains.

  • According to Danielle, it is helpful for her clients with asthma.

  • It is beneficial for people who are recovering from extraneous physical activities.

Improving Your Health with Four Sigmatic

  • Four Sigmatic’s name comes from identifying the most elite foods in the world after mapping them out in a statistical map.

  • These superfoods are four sigmas (standard deviations) above average food.

  • Coffee, cacao, reishi, chaga, ginger, turmeric, lion’s mane, and cordyceps are some of the superfoods that Four Sigmatic products are based on.

  • Danielle advises consuming functional mushrooms and other superfoods is best done when incorporated into your daily routine.

  • Four Sigmatic’s goal is to come up with a better option for you every step of the way.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

  1. “I look at them [mushrooms] like light switches, turning on, and activating our body.”

  2. “There's never a closed-door with natural medicine because it's almost like matchmaking.”

  3. “Listen to your body because this is going to be the best messaging system to let us know what's going on.”

  4. “Without fungi would be living under 1520 feet of debris across the whole planet.”

  5. “Being ever forward is starting with zone zeros that you can actually give, that you can actually overflow, that you can actually show up. But it starts here, and it starts investing in you. It's building from the ground up.”

Episode Highlights

Morning Rituals

  • Dr. G understands that it's hard to break habits and subconscious programs. Thus, he preaches the importance of 'me time' and rituals to his patients and clients.

  • When you take time for yourself, you start to get in touch with yourself—and everything follows.

  • It is essential to get under the sun 12 to 15 minutes between waking up and moving out.

  • After that, he does some joint movements. Another new ritual of his is to hang upright on a pull-up bar.

  • He drinks about a liter or a half of water before heading out to the beach while listening to music.

Grounding and Wim Hof Breathing

  • The earth is layered with negative electrons, and your body is a conduit to them.

  • Grounding on any surface—dirt, snow, sand—is powerful.

  • Dr. G walks at the beach as part of his morning ritual. It helps him visualize his day, life, and his gratitude and affirmations.

  • He also practices Wim Hof breathing.

  • Shallow breathing activates our sympathetic nervous system. That's why when we take ten deep breaths, we feel good—because the parasympathetic system is active.

At Home

  • For him, a clean space is vital.

  • Instead of drinking coffee, he takes a 3-minute cold shower to wake himself up.

Evening Rituals

  • At night, he does contrast hydrotherapy, where he switches from cold to hot water in rounds.

  • That stimulus is vital for the nervous system. It activates and balances the parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous system.

  • Finally, he meditates for about 20 minutes and reads for a while before going to bed.

The Biggest Eye Opener: Habit Stacking

  • It all started when he was dating a health coach with whom he talked about his trouble with meditating consistently. She suggested that he carve out time for habits.

  • The biggest eye-opener for him was habit stacking. He realized that he could build rituals around things that he was already doing

  • It brings awareness to your body, and it empowers you.

  • It is also a productive change because you decrease the amount of time you're on your phone.

  • Turning off your phone an hour before bed transfers all that energy and productivity to your mornings.

Snowball Effect

  • The things that cause you anxiety throughout the day tend to leak into your evening. It can mess up your sleep.

  • Follow a pattern where you're in a good place throughout the day.

  • Turning off your phone or Netflix can help you reflect on yourself and what happened in your day.

  • Find what is cathartic for you when you’re alone with yourself and your thoughts. For Dr. Christian, it was writing.

Finding Time for Rituals When Life Happens

  • Doing your rituals doesn't have to take that long. You can stack it and do it all at the same time when you're in a rush.

  • Touching your phone in the morning can be the most sabotaging thing.

  • Ritual stacking is a short-term hack for deviations in your schedule. The whole point is being present, and you can be present in doing anything.

Understanding Your Health: Prostate and Breast Cancer

  • When you urinate, make sure you have a normal, unchanging stream. Also note it should have no blood, and it's not bubbly.

  • Many things modulate hormones. One of the significant factors is what we put in our bodies.

  • Epigenetics is the modulation of DNA to express specific proteins based on what goes inside our bodies and our internal stress.

  • 90% of cancers, whether you have a family history or not, will come because of epigenetics.

  • It's never too early to start taking care of your prostate. At the top of the hierarchy is sleep.

Physiological Changes

  • We need to balance our hormones.

  • Our body needs consistency and routine.

  • Rituals reduce stress. Make sure your morning and nights are stacked with things you love to naturally reduce your stress.

Prostate Cancer

  • Conventional thinking: Reducing testosterone will keep your prostate healthy.

  • However, when it comes to how aggressive prostate cancer is, what men need to focus on is estrogen.

  • Low testosterone over time is a bigger problem than having higher amounts of testosterone. Hence, we need to keep it at a robust level.

What's In Our Home

  • The chlorofluorocarbons or CFCs are sometimes 100 times more present indoors than outdoors.

  • Off-gassing is a phenomenon when chemicals in items, like household products, break down, and they release gas. In turn, we end up breathing in these gases.

  • Our beds are where most changes happen. Thus, investing in a good bed is also a massive investment for your health.

  • Make sure that you have a good-quality air filter in your home and office.

Integrative Medicine: An All-Inclusive Approach

  • The conventional medical model does well when it comes to emergent medicine. However, we need integrative medicine, and we have to look at the big picture.

  • Integrative medicine is vital because not all models can work alone and completely.

  • Nutrition is the foundation of health, along with sleep, movement, and stress control.

The Quantitative and Qualitative Side of Studies

  • The problem with dietitians is most of their evidence and information is coming from the industry. They need to be pushed to do more objective research.

  • Studies guide for safety and efficacy.

  • However, studies will not fit every single person. This is an essential aspect of health that we need to understand.

  • Be careful of the information you read and hear. Be in touch with your body to know what applies to you.

  • Getting in touch with your body ties back to having those rituals. Knowing this, you'll know how to make smart decisions.

Why Music Hypes Us Up

  • The science behind music is vibration, frequency, and our biochemical changes. We function at different vibrations all the time. Hence, when you listen to your favorite song, you feel better because of how it shifts your vibration.

  • Not everyone connects with music. There are some people with more developed parts of the brain who receive music better and hear tones a little sharper.

  • Your parents can pass on their epigenetics and stimulus of music to you.

Transgenerational Effect

  • You can pass particular genetic changes to your child that create an environment in their body where they can't handle cortisol.

  • If you want kids, get yourself physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually well.

  • Conscious parenting is knowing how you want to raise your children and what you want to instill in them.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

  1. "Being alone is sometimes difficult, but it's actually sacred too."

  2. “[Rituals] will bring awareness to your body, your habits, and the self-sabotaging thoughts that we all tend to have—but it also empowers you.”

  3. "Getting in touch with your body is important because when you're in touch with your body, whatever influencer is pushing and you try it out, and you go, ‘Oh, hell no.’ Then you know, you are the person who's going to discern what you want."

  4. "The beautiful thing about music is that it resonates—music is vibration."

  5. "I think my ever forward is truly having the choice between love and fear, between everything. Every person I meet, every circumstance that comes in front of me, every everything that I see, every place I am, I can always act in a certain vibration, and that's the crazy part—we always have the ever forward choice."

Episode Highlights

Here's Our Story

  • Aside from his physical injuries, I struggled to cope with the loss of my father. It took me a decade to figure out my life.

  • Brad had to battle years of drug addiction. At 28 years old, he had nothing.

  • Maria grappled with an eating disorder and an unhealthy relationship with food. She went through a series of thought processing before she finally decided to confront her issues.

Taking Little Steps

  • Brad tried not to use drugs for a day. He then decided not to use drugs for a month. After a series of little steps, he now has a life beyond his wildest dreams.

  • Imagine a tree that you have to cut. Make little chips on the tree every day until you reach your goal.

  • The little steps may seem meaningless, but when you look back, everything will be different.

The Importance of Perspective

  • Maria's turning point was when she decided that she was deserving of a mission.

  • It is essential to look at things from a perspective of knowing they actually happened for you.

  • The Dao/Tao principle teaches us that our sufferings today may become our greatest blessings tomorrow.

  • Maria incorporates the Chakra System in her practice. Transform your adversity into something that contributes to your collective consciousness.

Take Your Time

  • People cope with challenges at different paces.

  • It took me 10 years from my father's passing until I finally decided to turn my life around.

  • Maria's health transformation was a 20-year journey.

  • It took Brad 12 years to get to a place where he is finally grateful.

  • Our experiences and setbacks are things that don’t completely go away. We just learn how to deal with them better.

Breaking Free from Shame

  • We have to process and release our emotions to transform them.

  • The emotions we suppress live inside us.

  • Instead of being ashamed, be proud that you go through these experiences and overcome them.

  • Without the release of emotion, we will not be able to break free from our paradigm.

A Holistic Approach to Nutrition Coaching

  • Everything is connected. You cannot deal with one problem without looking at all aspects of your life.

  • The body is a visual representation of what is happening in the mind.

  • In changing your mindset, your body will have a different expression as well.

  • Listen to the full episode to know more about how we used our own experiences on nutrition coaching to live a more holistic life.

How Do You Know Your Passion?

  • Brad, Maria, and I all had to go through a massive struggle before we found our passion.

  • However, for some people, they instantly know their passion.

  • Our biggest traumas will yield the biggest change in our lives. “The greater the pain, the greater the awakening.”

  • Ask yourself, "Why am I this person?"

Change: A Pleasurable Experience

  • When something becomes routine, there is no reward for it anymore.

  • You cannot just stay still in life and be content, especially when you're exposed to quick successions.

  • To keep moving, you have to go through a lot of undoings. You might have to undo your belief systems and thought processes.

Be Your Own Creator

  • Sometimes, we need to stop asking ourselves, "Who am I?"

  • Instead of constantly trying to find the right version of yourself, you can just create it.

  • Listen to your inner calling. Don't let other people tell you who you're supposed to be.

Episode Highlights

Why You Should Travel Young

  • Traveling in your 20s is way different than when you’re in your 50s or 60s.

  • When you’re young, you’re unlikely to be tied down by your responsibilities to your own family.

  • Travel to enjoy life.

Preparing for a Long Trip

  • Allot at least six months to prepare for the trip. During that time, learn about the countries you are planning to visit.

  • If you have a job, inform your superiors about your trip and ask how you can do your job online.

  • Make sure to accomplish the 8 recommended steps Josie discusses in the full episode before venturing to a long trip.

Preparing Your Family and Friends for Your Trip

  • Some family members may be wary about your plans, so you need to assure them that you have thoroughly planned your trip.

  • Be patient in explaining your reasons to them.

  • Explain how travel can also help you grow and learn about life.

Preparing Yourself for Your Trip

  • Start by practicing minimalism.

  • Since you will be traveling across different countries, pack light. Five shirts, two tank tops, and two pairs of pants is a start.

  • Plan enough, but not too much.

  • Expect that nothing is set in stone and everything is subject to change.

How Traveling Changes Your Life

  • You will start to plan your days ahead to avoid wasting time looking for something to do.

  • You will learn to talk to your fellow travelers for recommendations for hostels or places to visit.

  • Also, you will learn how to relax and take time for yourself.

  • You will also learn how to make things last (e.g., money).

Budgeting While Traveling

  • Track your expenses to avoid overspending.

  • Visit free places or cheap ones if it costs money.

  • Look for budget-friendly accommodations (e.g., hostels or couch surfing).

  • Adjust your spending depending on your capacity.

Staying Fit While Traveling

  • Do not expect that there will be gyms in all the places you will visit.

  • A YouTube search for a quick yoga or fitness routine can be your exercise guide instead.

Things You Can Do When Traveling

  • Experience local by asking for a local’s advice on what to eat or visit in their country.

  • You can also experience local festivals and get to learn about their culture for free.

  • There are also a lot of volunteering opportunities that you can grab when you travel.

  • If you are short on money, you can look for remote job opportunities to support you.

Tracking Your Journey

  • To monitor your journey, you can do vlogs for YouTube or blog about the different places you visited.

  • You can also snap some pictures of these places to add to your blog or Instagram.

  • Always remember to live your life as it happens and not through the lens of your phone or camera.

Episode Highlights

Family Time With Loved Ones

  • As a relationship expert, family time and fellowship with loved ones are the essence of Figs’ job.

  • He is driven to work because he wants to be a present dad the way his dad never was.

  • All the work he has done for himself was so he could be in a long-term relationship and be the husband and father that his family deserves.

  • His favorite place to be after a long day is in bed with his wife, their two kids, and their Labradoodle. Being there together, for him, is the closest thing to paradise.

Bedtime

  • Up until the Industrial Revolution, it was normal for people to have two periods of sleep.

  • They will sleep for 3 or 4 hours, get up for a couple of hours, and work or attend to their duties. Then, they go back to sleep again for 4 or 5 hours.

  • Both Figs and his wife work as couples therapists, and this model works for their family.

  • They go to sleep with their kids at 8 p.m., and then they wake up at around 10 p.m. until midnight. They make sure to have an hour or more together every night, and then they go back to sleep.

Relationship Building Therapy

  • We're all born to be emotionally bonded.

  • Our body is hardwired to detect if our primary other is there for us. If not, our limbic system experiences a fundamental threat, and we all protest that threat differently.

  • We are the amalgamation of strategies we have to avoid the pain of not being connected.

  • People in a relationship co-create an emotional system to make it work. Figs shows this system to them so that they can fight it.

  • People’s worst fights and repetitive arguments are evidence of just how important they are to each other.

Personal Development vs. Relationship

  • The personal development movement in America started in the 1960s. The idea here is to have self-responsibility, know yourself, communicate who you are, and let people know what you need.

  • The notion that we have to love ourselves first before we can love someone else is not true.

  • We are an interdependent species. By having relationships with other people, we find out the parts of us that need more love.

  • The best place to do personal development work and learn to love yourself is within a relationship.

Knowing If a Relationship is “The One”

  • When in a triggering situation, the initial response of people seeking personal development is to feel hurt. The second is to see a growth opportunity.

  • The first thing to do is to understand your relationship from the perspective of witnesses who see it unfold. This is where couples counselors or relationship experts come in.

  • Once your counselor sees the emotional system you’re co-creating and reflect it back to you, you can then see things from the system’s perspective. Through this, you grow your ability to empathize with both you and your partner.

  • Sitting in the empathic experience of hurting in the relationship will either draw you closer to each other or make you realize that you're not right for each other.

A Relationship Takes Work

  • If you really love each other, you will eventually scare each other.

  • When you’re both scaring each other, that's when the war starts.

  • When you get in those moments, you need to stay and do the work. Be curious about your partner and the system you're co-creating together.

Practice of Empathy

  • A simple way to think of self-empathy is to imagine that there are multiple people inside of you.

  • In matters of love, the primary relationship is what matters so much to us. It affects you the most when criticism comes from people you have close relationships with.

  • Now and again, add a little empathic voice toward yourself when you don't hit your personal best. It's not possible to always be performing at our best capacity.

  • People are going to respond better if you're kinder and more empathetic to yourself.

  • Validating your primary partner’s hurting and having more empathy for their vulnerable self allow your relationship to have less suffering.

Fear of Getting Closer to the Truth

  • Everybody is vulnerable. Everybody is scared of being abandoned and rejected or feeling too much or not enough for someone.

  • Be the one you've been waiting for. Know yourself and your vulnerabilities and then show up and love that part of yourself. That way, you’ll be “the one” for the people who are dearest in your life.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

  1. “People's worst fights, people's biggest disconnection, (and) ongoing repetitive arguments are actually evidence of just how important they are to each other, not evidence that there's something fundamentally wrong with us.”

  2. “Are we coming to the end of this relationship? Or is this another growth opportunity?”

  3. “If you really love each other, you're going to get to a place where you scare each other.”

  4. “At the end of the day, it's not a sustainable way for the course of an entire lifetime to be beating ourselves up so that we perform our maximum capacity.”

  5. On living a life Ever Forward: “What it means to me is to continue to be honest with myself, be curious about myself, look inside, find what the real vulnerability is underneath whatever actions I'm taking, and then be willing and brave and courageous enough to share that vulnerability with the world.”

  1. Learn how to preserve the sacredness of food and its importance in our lives.

  2. Jessica will also discuss how to use food as fuel to move freely with nourishment and fulfillment, instead of using it as an escape.

  3. The significant differences between emotional eating, diets, and eating disorders.

Episode Highlights

Having Sacred Time with Our Food

  • Emotional eating can get worse due to the lack of prioritization of mealtime being a sacred experience.

  • Due to the lack of sacred space for eating, we steal our nourishment from other things—for example, using technology while having a meal.

  • Eating a meal in a disconnected way gives power to the emotional eating cycle.

  • Adults must teach children that food is sacred.

Sharing the Sacredness of Food

  • Sabotage comes from our relationship with others.

  • Most people feel uncomfortable with changing their bad eating habits, so they avoid it.

  • Be in the conversation to reinforce the sacredness of food.

  • On Jessica’s retreats for her clients, mealtime is a sacred experience and space. Talking and usage of technology are not allowed.

  • Set yourself for success rather than sabotage.

Jessica's Journey

  • For 20 years, her love-hate relationship with food was torture.

  • She came from a family with a long history of addiction in various forms.

  • Jessica tried many ways to break the cycle of emotional eating, but it didn't work.

  • For emotional eaters, diets don't work. It's all about the relationship with food.

  • She does this work to support people who are going through the same pain she experienced before.

Breaking the Cycle of Emotional Eating

  • Choosing to break the cycle of emotional eating is a decision you have to make every day.

  • When you heal your love-hate relationship with food, everyone in your life will benefit.

Fostering a Supportive Community

  • When you surround yourself with a like-minded community, everything gets easier.

  • Support from the people around you and your community is essential.

  • When you set an example, it creates a ripple effect. You can touch many lives by being an excellent example to others.

Separating Emotional Eating from Dieting

  • Emotional eating and dieting are two completely different things.

  • Often, the issue of emotional eating gets tangled with dieting and eating disorders.

  • Emotional eating isn't what you're eating. It's about why you're eating.

  • For the longest time, Jessica didn't know she was an emotional eater. She used to change her diet and exercise a lot but later realized it's not working for her.

The Power of Why

  • You are responsible for choosing what you eat.

  • Emotional eaters tend to avoid responsibility for their experiences.

  • If your reason for eating something is that you want it, go deeper. Ask yourself what you are really hungry for.

Jessica's Current Projects

  • She enjoys making retreats for her clients.

  • She has recently introduced the four roots of emotional eating at her retreats.

Testimonies of Jessica's Clients

  • She talked about the story of one of her clients, Sandy, a top surgeon. Sandy was able to channel her newfound mental clarity and energy on starting an organization that helps doctors identify victims of sex trafficking.

  • Healing your relationship with food can open various avenues for healing.

Jessica's Big “Aha” Moment

  • Her relationship with food reflects on how she's showing up on various aspects of her life.

  • Emotional eating offers an escape that's not healthy and sustainable.

  • Due to her healing, she feels a deeper connection with her husband, a greater sense of vulnerability in their relationship, and, ultimately, more love.

On Doing the Work

  • The mind interferes with the body.

  • It is worth it to do the work and change your destructive relationship with food.

  • Commit. Trust. Be authentic and find integrity with yourself and all the things that you do.

  • Pay attention to your body and your thought process.

  • Learn the language of your own body.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

  1. “I think that pattern, that habit of eating in a disconnected way just really gives power to the emotional eating cycle because emotional eating is a cycle that is truly based on disconnection and avoidance.”

  2. “I come from a long history of many generations of addiction in various forms. My parents were emotional eaters, and I came to this point of, like, ‘Enough is enough. This is going to stop with me.’”

  3. “For those who are afraid of being the first one to make the change, what I will say is that when the tide rises, all boats rise with it.”

  4. “A lot of us have not been educated on what emotional eating is, so it tends to sort of get scooped into these other avenues, like dieting or even eating disorders, where I really believe that emotional eating is its own sort of entity.”

  5. “I'm really grateful for the journey that I've walked with emotional eating because healing my emotional eating has given me the capacity to recognize how emotionally healthy I am now, how emotionally resilient I am, how emotionally fit I am.”

Three Value Bombs: Why You Should Listen to the Full Episode

  1. You don’t need anything beyond the fundamentals of diet and training.

  2. The Pareto Principle works in the kitchen and the gym too. Do the 20% work that gives you 80% results.

  3. Fitness companies can be both profitable and responsible at the same time.

-----

Episode Highlights

Mike’s Morning Routine

  • Mike wakes up early, at about 6 a.m., and drinks plenty of water to replenish fluids.

  • He also goes to an infrared sauna because it helps with the inflammation he experiences with crepitus.

  • He reads a book first thing in the morning to allow for more family time later in the day.

Insights on Life

  • Your plans can change based on what happens to you and your surroundings.

  • Be more aware of the people with whom you spend your time, as it will affect who you are.

  • You have to consider how you invest your time.

Contributing Factors to Mike’s Success

  • Mike started his career by writing books. He published Bigger, Leaner, Stronger through Amazon’s KDP.

  • He has always been a great student with interest in learning and solving problems.

  • Mike thought of writing his first book the way he did for his previous job writing manuals for healthcare companies.

  • He constantly received emails from women asking if they can practice what he wrote in his book. Mike realized the need and wrote a book for women.

  • He believes that reading is critical to one’s success. The average American reads only one book a year.

  • The books he wrote now sold over a million and a half copies. It also brought in a lot of high-caliber people.

Beyond Bigger, Leaner, Stronger: For Intermediate and Advanced Lifters

  • Mike is finishing a new book called Beyond Bigger, Leaner, Stronger.

  • With Bigger, Leaner, Stronger, you’re given 9 to 12 sets per major muscle per week. There is a lot of evidence that shows it’s a great place for people who are new to proper weightlifting.

  • However, there will come a time where your beginner routine will become a maintenance program.

  • When you’re stuck after the newbie gains, increase the volume and intensity of your training.

  • Add things to your routine that are likely to make a difference.

  • Turning to sophisticated and trendy training programs is not as effective as doubling down on the fundamentals.

  • It's not about the number of reps; it's the number of hard sets with weights in the range of 70% to 85% 1RM.

  • As long as you're pushing hard, a set of six reps is going to be just as conducive to muscle growth as a set of 12 reps.

  • Increase your volume if you're doing 9 to 12 per major muscle group per week, and you find yourself stuck.

  • No matter how theoretically sound your plan is, you only notice the results when performing and training.

The Problem with Most People

  • The essential difference between the intermediate and advanced programs versus the beginner program is you need to work harder.

  • A lot of people may have great programs, but they don't train hard enough.

  • Some people also rest way too much in between sets and don't reach technical failure.

  • Social media is a double-edged sword. It can have positive peer pressure, but it can also affect your commitment and focus in the gym.

Learning From Experience and Past Injuries

  • Now, Mike is more aware and more conscientious about taking things slower and what it means to be hurt.

  • Know your limitations to avoid or when you’re recovering from an injury.

  • It’s good to have someone who can help you with your therapy and recovery process. Mike works with a rolfer who can give him advice about areas that need work.

  • However, it is up to him to maintain the therapy.

  • The importance of avoiding injury and learning what your body needs and what it doesn’t come with time and expertise.

Will Mike Be Shredded Again?

  • Mike currently has around 9–10% body fat, which is ideal for him. He likes his current physique, and it is also easier to maintain.

  • Unless you are on performance-enhancing drugs, having only 5–6% body fat is not sustainable.

  • Taking drugs will affect your health and give you bigger problems in the long run.

  • The Instagram standard is ridiculous and not genuine. Don’t hold yourself to that standard.

  • Taking steroids is a hack Mike does not recommend.

Advice for Beginners

Diet

  • Learn about the energy balance and macronutrient balance and use them to your advantage.

  • Don’t wed yourself to a fad diet. It might work for you, but not for the reasons marketers tell you.

  • Find a dietary protocol that works for you. It should be sustainable and exciting.

  • Get enough sleep.

  • After a couple of months, it’s normal to not perform quite as well as you did in the beginning.

  • Prepare your meals yourself. Get the majority of your calories from relatively unprocessed foods.

  • There are no off-limit foods apart from those that upset your stomach or don’t make you feel good.

  • You’re allowed to eat anything you want to cover 20% of your calories per day.

Training

  • Do 3–5 hours of training a week.

  • If you want to burn calories and move, exercise works. But if you want to make consistent progress, you need to train.

  • Put most of your training time to muscle training.

  • If you want to gain muscle and strength quickly, try strength training.

  • The key is getting strong; muscles will come after that.

  • Cardiovascular exercise is good. But keep in mind that the more cardio you do, the harder it will be to gain muscle.

Mike’s Visions for Legion and the Fitness Industry

  • Mike frowns upon the industry's obsession with making the body “pretty.”

  • It may be physically healthy to be obsessed, but it can be emotionally and psychologically unhealthy.

  • Mike wants the “evidence-based movement” to keep growing, where credible people educate others about fitness.

  • He wants fitness resources to be more accessible by laymanizing jargon.

  • Mike wants his competitors to follow his lead in funding more scientific research in the sports nutrition space.

  • Expect transparency in Legion’s manufacturing and third-party testing.

  • Legion is also going to use only 100% recycled plastic and refill bags instead of new tubs for supplements. The company will also partner with a charity that works to clean up plastic waste.

How Mike Matthews Lives a Life Ever Forward

  • Mike is focused on self-improvement and having a system to achieve that.

  • He keeps an open mind and is willing to try things.

  • Mike also believes in the “more for less” method.

  • When he has a vision, he makes a conservative estimate of the time and energy it will take to achieve it. Then, he doubles it and ponders if he’s okay with that. If he is, then he goes all in.

  • Focusing on the details makes the compound effect more substantial.

  • Don’t take a shortcut in doing the work you need to do.

5 Powerful Quotes from This Episode

  1. “Add things that are likely to make a difference. That's where the next level of education needs to occur. You don't need to know anything beyond the fundamentals in the beginning.”

  2. “If what you're doing mostly makes sense, if the volume you're doing right now is not producing results, chances are you could just increase that, and that will start producing results.”

  3. “Instagram standards are so ridiculous because of how many people are lying. You can stay lean if you're willing to be miserable and if you're on drugs chart, you can stay super shredded. It's not healthy, and you're not going to feel good.”

  4. “Are you training hard enough? A lot of people actually go to the gym, and they're not. They might have a great program on paper, but they just don't train very hard.”

  5. “The importance of volume, that's something more and more research is indicating that is one of the key levers that you need to pull to continue getting bigger and stronger.”
